Mike. according to AS rules and regulations typing in caps and bold letters is rude and the mods at AS have a zero tollerance for caped/bold replys:p :p

Of the two, the Husky will have better air cleaner performance and less vibration. The Stihl will last longer, have higher used resale, and be easier to get parts and service.

However you will increase vibration and use a lot of gas.

Mike, where in the world do you get your facts? IMO how long a saw will last is very dependent on how well it is maintained. As for the "more vibration"..........I don't even know how to respond to that one. Out of the modded saws that I have, none have anymore vibration than it did when it was stock.

I'm a husky man myself. I'll admit I like stihls, too. But one must make a commitment to a full line of saws. I've got a nearly new 3120 (bad boy), 2 394's, and two372's, several 335xpt tree saws. I buy junk saws for half of my groundmen. They don't care about my saws the way I care about them. The 357 is a perfect medium size and it's pro. Any of the 50cc or slighly less make great ground saws. I would suggest the 353 pro model for your most conscientious ground man. Poulan or homelite for the rest!

are all 35cc saws used for topping, sucker?

As a real professional arborist, I feel topping saw is alright to use, here's why. On trims, I don't use a chainsaw. the only time I use a chainsaw is when "topping" out a tree to remove it.

They don't make a 351 anymore.

I thouhgt he asked for a medium size saw for use in tree and on the ground. The 346 is to short to be running on the ground, one needs to bend over too far or flex at the knees to long. and the 346 modded or not isnt a bucking saw no matter what, get a 044 or 372. The 044 being the smart choice. There is a reason that Shot crews use the 044 for fir work. also it takes a really long time to get a saw back from the resident builders it would appear.

this is my present line up 020..huski 141..huski...357xp..288xp..and 3120xp [bought 2 weeks ago] sorry stihl fans im not keen on em.........yes you did read correct a 141 cheap as chips and they last a few years trouble free:D oh yeh i got one other 350 gut less rubbish ah and makita top hadle which is ok but not a touch on my 020

I just make them up, why?

What if both saws are maintained exactly the same?

Ok, so you and rb contend that you can take more air and gas mixture, at a richer concentration, compress it into a smaller area, ignite it to make a bigger explosion in the cylinder, expell the gas through a bigger hole making a louder noise, and all while using no more gasoline and having no more vibration. That's some feat!

Hey Mike howabout backing the facts.

Read my post there is nothing about more fuel consumption. I do agree that modded saws can use more fuel, but the more vibration comment is entirely wrong!

Fair enough.

After further consideration I think I am going to get the 357XP with a 20" bar.

I decided against the 346XP b/c I am afraid it might be a little undersized to use as my primary ground saw. (Although it would be lighter for those times I am forced to take it into the tree).

Those who recommended the 346XP, am I wrong on this point?

And if somebody wants to modify and sell me a 346XP - so it does the job of a standard 357XP - drop me a personal message and I'll consider it.

He sucked you in. Since when is 'vibration' even a consideration with modern chainsaws? He's yanking your chain and you are dancing like Pinocchio. ;)

I'd say vibration should be the number one consideration for a person who runs a saw proffesionally. Safety is important. Talk to somebody suffering from White Hand or CTS. They can be as dibilitating as chopping your arm off.

Find one manufacturers site that doesn't rate the saws vibration, then come back and say it doesn't matter.

Do not misunderstand me, I love the modded saw. Just don't try to say it's only advantages, that's not the case.
