Spent the morning cutting with my 5100, and noticed it was running a bit leaner than usual. Synthetic oil, maybe?

Anyway, I tached it and it was a bit faster WOT than I like. The high speed limiter is stopping it from going any richer. I searched for specific advice on the 5100, but what is the most sano way to allow me to richen it up a tab? I could shave off the arm on the limiter that is stopping it, but I want to see if there is a smarter way to go before I start cutting.

WHen I bought my 066, it ran too lean and I took it back to the dealer and he had a tool to pop the limiter out and reposition it. Took like 15 seconds and have had no problem ever since.

BTW the filter is very clean and I checked the carb screws as I've read they can be loose and cause leaning running. They all seemed fine. And refilled the fuel tank just to make sure low fuel level wasn't causing the leaness as well. That's about the limit of what else I could think of to check to understand why it is running a bit fast. It's raining out, can that do it? Gas in can is pretty fresh, but I've been running the same already batch for about a week.

I'm not sure about the 5100 but I had the same problem with my 7900. I couldn't get the limiter cap off no matter how I tried. I didn't want to force anything and cause more problems. The Stihl limiter cap removal tool didn't work on the Dolmar. So, I cut the limiter cap tabs off with the cap in place using a Dremel and a small burr. It worked great and now so does the saw right at 13.5K.

Bring it over.... before you mess it up ;)

The oil won't make a difference. Have you tached it?

I think maybe I'll take you up on that.

Yes, I tached it and it was bumping over 14,5 at WOT. I think it was hitting (barely) the cuttoff. It was running fine, but I like to be a little bit conservative to allow for day to day variances.

Have you ported the muffler yet, Bill?

I think I had mine around 14,500 at Sequim...Backed it off later, put on a 16 inch bar/square chisel .375 and she literally flies through the wood....still have the pipe on it.

No, mine is still stock. Run an 18 inch 3/8 square chisel and it does pretty well.

I saw the vid of your piped 5100 and it was pretty amazing, actually. Kind of like to hear that pipe just for fun.

When you're finished, I would be interested in how you got it done.

And by the way B_Turner, I appreciated your advice on the Peltor ear protectors. They work very well. Thanks.

You will, we gotta get together at Andy's and have a mini GTG.....and video tape our saws..... I told Andy I'd bet him a case of Thunderbird (his fav) that my piped 5100 would make 3 cuts before his 361 finishes one......:hmm3grin2orange: ..

or something....

I have some holly for ya two, too..... 10-16" dbh and 3-6 feet long

Let's do it! I want to see all those mods in head to head action. And I want to see what a modded 7900 does as well as the 5100s.

Just say when, and I will make the time. And I'll take that holly home with me.:)

Do they still make T-bird? WHen I was in high school a good friend's mother lived on that stuff as the price was right.

Dunno....I try to stay out of gutters.....

we could see if we could flop another fir onto the famous trailer......hey, a trifecta!!

I'm so far behind with work, I don't know when I can get out there. Hopefully soon, though, as there's work to be done, 'specially if Andy's buxom neighbor can get coordinated with the next neighbor over on a few trees that need to kiss terra firma. And I can't leave the pipe on the 5100 for that long (It's a bit of a delicate task for a klutz to r and r.....)

Actually, flying would be if and when I get a race chain built for it. I think I'll get a 24 incher built ( with enough links for the 9 tooth sprocket for the 3120)., and could alter it down to 20 or 16..and back and forth.

I ran the modded 3120 with 20 inch and 9 tooth at Sequim. I think it was at least 30-35% slower than Robert's piped 088 work saw with Art Martin chain, but still pretty fast.
