From what I've read, Dean is the man to talk to... I'm merely looking for numbers. Saw: ms 460- dual port muffler, max flo filter- I've got it idleing around 25-2600- topped out - 13,800. Me being a novice builder with plenty of tools, and power hungry- I bought the bb kit. Any recommendations on carb setup- max rpm? I'm looking for a good balance of torque/hp. Any help you can give.....? Big thanks!! :newbie:

Thanks Redneck- is everyone that's new a "Junior member"? Doesn't matter...:chainsaw:

Yup, it's a newbie thing, I think once you hit 100 posts it changes, but I am such a post whore I've forgotten:hmm3grin2orange:

I have an 046BB myself, very nice setup!! But I didn't build it so I can't offer much help there. I doknow some of the carbs have to be rejetted, but no idea how you know which one is what, so again, it's time for the big boys.

I decided to try the BBs again last month. I had one milled 50thous. on the bottom and on the top the cylinder. Ported the holy hell out of it and put on a brand new 460 I bought up at Madsen's. Also split the case and put ceramic bearings in.
Same ol' same ol'.
Took the OEM kit, took 35 thous. of the base of that cylinder, and off the top of the piston making a "pop up".
Ported it.
Completly blew the doors off the BB, which is now on another saw I built.

After my second kit - there are zero gains for me to had in the BBs. I wonder if those who love them so much have tried the same modds with a stock OEM kit. If not try it - I'll bet you will never go back.

i think 100 puts you at senior member, but don't hold me to that :monkey:

Hmmm

:bang: Well what I'm trying to understand is the reply from tree sling'r. If you took an oem cylinder- shaved .035 off the base and off the piston- how have you made a gain/ difference in compression or cc's. The displacement should be the same, you just lowered the cylinder/piston. Did you dome or step the piston for an intake/exhaust increase, besides the port job? I'm not out to disprove anyone- just get ideas. I've rebuilt automotive engines, this stihl is a first for me when it comes to 2 strokes. O yea, what's this thing called squish? Compression increase??

off the top of the piston making a "pop up".

We cut the piston and left some in the middle to fill up the cumbustion chamber.

To get the best gains out of the big bore kits compaired to a stock kit I think you will need to put on a larger bore carburetor. I found this out playing with the 650 the we ended up putting the big bore 066 on. It just needed more air on the intake side of things.

BTW give me a call any time and I will help you any way I can. if you need numbers or other help. feel free to call the shop.

Thank you...

Big thanks Dean, I haven't started the conversion (bb kit) yet, I'm trying to get as much info/parts I'll need before I dive in. Hopefully I'll be able to call early next week- "afternoon shift" and get some ideas from ya. Can't thank you enough. :newbie:

......

I believe it changes to "member" after 30 posts, and then to "senior member" after 100. "Arboristsite MVP" starts at 500 posts.

Welcome to the site! :biggrinbounce2:

BB kit

Dean, my buddy said that the BB kits where refurbished from a previous used cylinder, them bored out and chrome plated instead of nickle imbeded. I thaught that they would have to be manufactured to sell them, or else they would have to say that they where refurbished when they sell them. I think he is full of s:censored: , but I figure I would ask somone who works with them. Do they last as long as stock?

From what I have seen BB kits are in general chrome plated, this should not last as long as a good niksil bore that many if not most curent pro saws use. Chrome does to hold lubricant like niksil and is softer. But at 1/3 the cost the BB can pay for it's self.
