What if you're 4' tall?
Gypo, the limbs of that walnut are probably about the size of many smaller walnut trees around here that are harvested for common lumber. Are the limbs of a tree like that sent to the mill, or are they left as slash? Seems like an awful lot of good wood just in them.
George
Hi George, although limbs are generally used as firewood or left as slash, ocassionaly they are sold as veneer.
Just last year the Asians were buying any log down to 8" dia. and 6' long. They were paying 1$/ft. U.S. This was a one time shot though and the market dried up in 6 months.

George if your only 4' tall then I guess you got yourself a small problem you'll need a step stool...So instead of 4'5" for you it would be roughly 3' give or take a little either way..
Actually, I'm 6'4", but my breasts sag.
Bet some portable sawmillers would love to find some slash like that. But you know, right place, right time, etc.
Wish there were still trees like these around here.
Thanks,
George
Well I got around to measuring that tree. It's a Pin Oak, there a silo nearby that's about 68ft. high and it's at least 20-30ft. taller than it. For comparsion that's an 8" Stihl wedge and a 20 oz. drink bottle. It measures 185" around at 4 1/2' to 5' off the ground. I think that converts to 59" across.
Grateful
OK, some here have seen this picture before. This is the last cut from my first crane removal about 10-12 years ago. 35 ton crane. The stump cut had been finished, this is when the crane picked up the trunk.
Here's a different oak tree several years later. I'm at about 20'-25' and the saw is a Husky 3120XP with 48" bar.
These aren't squat compared to Graeme's latest pictures. Check out the 'general apology' thread in the climbers forum. THAT man has removed some BIG trees!
You wouldnt catch me climbing up that trunk. I dont care what the pay was. I can imagine the trunk takeing you for a ride as it sways back and forth after its top is cut. Not fun IMO.
