I need to find a source (besides Stihl) for the Bing carb rebuild kit for my 038 mag saw. The dealer told me today the kit was $56.00. I'm thinking about replacing the carb, but was wondering if there was a Tilly or a Walbro swap for this machine. I hate the idea of spending $56.00 for a carb kit when I could get another carb with readily available kits for under $12.00. Thanks in advance for any insight and information. ~Tommy~

For the Bing #65-940-203 G&D kit I pay $4.07 ($7.65 retail) for aftermarket kits from Laser.

The Tillston from a 038 SUPER has the same size venturi as the Bing, and in my experience they tune the same, on all my 038S/038M conversions anyway. That is clean carbs, Bing and Tilly, had same Hi/Lo settings when properly tuned, Tilly rebuild kits are much cheaper. Note: If you do change carbs, check the tuning/mixture, you might get a bum carb and fry things otherwise

The early Tilly on a 038AV was smaller and a no go on super/mag saws

one of the problems with these kits is they only contain the gaskets, diaphram's etc but they do not contain the needle, and metering lever. I hope I can reuse these parts. I bought one of these hoping this will relieve the problem. Otherwise I will probably spring for the carb for a better long term solution. Thanks guys!

Stihl shop manual says to put a 038 Super Tilston carb on when going from 038AV to 038 super.

I'd go with a Tilston from a super or a Bing from a mag . They have the same size throat, and seem to tune about the same

Never measured a 038 AV carb but the shop manual must mention the above for a reason.

Check the inlet lever: that it is free and level with the carb body, not sticking on it's spindle, and spring in proper position

Inspect the inlet needle and seat for debris, if inlet needle has a ring worn on the seat it may need replacement

Check that (new?) diaphragm is not holding inlet lever open.

When you assemble carb pressure test inlet, it should not leak down with ca. 10 psi (you can start out with this test)

P.S. NEVER USE STARTING FLUID IN A TWO STROKE MOTOR!!!

Dribble in a little bit of mix instead

I wound up replacing the carb on the saw. Went through the Bing with a fine toothed comb, ultrasonic cleaner, rebuilt, adjusted but never would run properly. If I had it to do over I wouldn't have wasted the money on the kit (just me though). It's a powerhouse of a saw.

Opening up this old thread.

I am looking for a full carb kit for the Bing on my 038M. I would appreciate hearing from folks with somewhat-recent experience with a specific kit. I am not currently looking for a replacement carb.

Thanks,

Roy
