Yesterday, I planted some trees for a couple on the hill in Central Point, Oregon, where the summers are fairly warm.

Other trees on their property - I suppose planted by another landscaper - had Black 4" ADS drain pipe protecting the trunks; whether for deer or sun, I'm not sure. We pulled the wrap off.

Other than the fact that black ADS prevents trunks from acclimating to sun, I'd imagine that the interior of the pipe could get wickedly hot.

I'm trying alternatives to the black flexible ties in this area to prevent hot materials from pressing on the trunks.

I've grabbed black pots, black tie and black drain pipe in the summer before, and I know it gets just as hot as most other black colored items.

Has anybody ever run across articles on materials used for contact with tree trunks in regards to heat, or color and heat?

Makes sense but I haven't read anything about it. I would imagine its the same kinda thing like after you remove a swimming pools winter cover and lay it on the ground. If you leave it on laying on the lawn to long on a hot sunny day with the black side up...you will have cook your grass and have a big brown grass circle to show for in all summer long! (been there did that). Getting back to your post, Don't they make a white perforated tile hose as well? HC

White latex paint mixed with thy-ram(sp) and apply around base of (fruit) tree. Keeps rabbits & mice away. This was told to me by an orchard farmer. May try looking in some agricultural books.
