I've been asked to remove black locusts (Robinia pseudoacacia) from a property that is in close proximity to a wetlands. Not too close but the conservation groups are keeping an eye on the project. They want the trees removed due to their invasiveness and ask for the future sprouts from the then removed tree to be killed out also. Is there any way to kill off future grow back from locusts after they have been cut down? Any herbicide application that will work back through the roots so the trees won't come back? Black locust seems to come back agressively after cutting the main tree and the conservation group is concerned. Any insight? BTW, I'm a licensed pesticide applicator.

Tordon (sp?) is the only thing I know of that might work. You have to put it on after a fresh cut on the stump, apply to sapwood and it goes down to the root system.

I have super concentrate Roundup (glyphosate). Would that do the same thing? I realize Roundup works back through the plant after being sprayed on the foliage but what about the stump?

Honestly I do not know. I've used the tordon with good results and I have heard that concentrated roundup works also. I don't have enough experience with either to make a solid recommendation on your application.

Cape,

Velpar.

Just might have to get creative to stay on label.
It will sterilize the soil around the stump for a season or two.
It is nasty evil stuff but will stop everything in it's tracks stump applied, or soil applied.

Stay safe!

Limited experience using roundup to kill the stump. I cut a small thornless honey locust last spring and put concentrated RU on the stump. No sprouts from the stump seen this year and I didn't spot any coming from the roots. I would say it is too soon to tell on that short period.

I removed a large Black Locust in the back yard and spent several years with dilute RU chasing the root suckers. I didn't see any this year. That is a project that willwork in a small place on one tree, I don't think it is practical on a larger project.

We did 1 in the winter a while ago and ground out the stump. Springtime, sprouts ALL over the yard, no way you could roundup them all without killing the lawn and shrubs etc., took a few years for them to stop coming up.

Tordon or Garlon can be applied to the cut stump or by basal bark treatment. RoundUp Pro straight (don't mix with water) can be applied to the cut stump. Try to treat the stumps within 30 minutes of removal. Since these are near wetlands, check the label on the Garlon and Tordon. Last time I used these they could not be applied within 15? feet on water.
