Thanks HIOCTANE for the info. When I did the leak test it was leaking really bad.
I still am alittle puzzled, so I take a screwdriver in by the crankshaft and try to pry the seal out. Looks like there is a ring around the seal that I have to get out first, but I could be wrong. My shop manual reallly doesn't explain things too well in this area.
Any more info would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

The outer metal ring comes out with the rubber seal and is replaced as one part. Be careful when prying out the seal to not damage the case or the bearing under the seal.

go buy a new oil seal before removing the old one.

once you see new oil seal, it will be self explanatory how it comes out. be careful not to scatch mating surface when removing old seal.

you will destroy oil seal getting it out. that's normal.

when installing new seal, starting new seal dead square is everything. use a deep socket same diameter as oil seal. or if socket is not deep enough.

fabricate a drive tool from a hollow tubing. same diameter as oil seal. if the seal start to till, stop remove and try again until seal goes in square to hole.

then gently tap in all the way in to seat. then you are done!

When lacking a seal removing tool, I have been successful using the following method. With a 1/16" cobalt drill bit, drill into the seal face dead center being extremely careful to stay away from the crankcase. Drill another hole identically at 180 degrees from this hole. Next, carefully thread in an appropriately sized wood screw until it gets a good bite. Now, with side-cutters, pry one side, then the other. Alternate until the seal comes out. Blow the minute amount of cuttings out with compressed air and insert new seal. Make sure inner lip is lubricated and does not fold over. If this starts to happen STOP and flip the lip in with a small needle from your wifes sewing kit. Continue until the seal is flush with the crankcase. Good luck buddy. Simon.

PS. Going halibut fishing on the West Coast, back Thursday. Have a safe week guys, there are few tools more dangerous than a chainsaw.

Thanks everyone for the info, I am going to try it later. Will not be able to get any parts till tuesday.
Again thank-you!!

I was able to get the oil seal out and I now need to replace the bearing, there is some nicks out of the balls. Do I have to take it to the dealer to get the case split or can I do this myself? Also what about the bearings, can I replace them myself or take it to the dealer?
Thanks

Case must be split to replace the bearings, they press in from the inside. they should be changed in pairs. All the case screws must be removed and guide pins punched out and case will separate. New bearing must be set in straight or you will have a very short lived saw. If you are not comfortable doing this yourself may I suggest stripping it down to a case and sending it to one of the sponsers on site for bearings and seals. Then you can reassemle the outer components. Good luck.

I should know, but where is Arnprior?Do you need to go past Haliburton on the way to anywhere? (Toronto?)

There's a sponser in the Haliburton area (ehp)
