Hi guys,

I wish to learn how to repair and service my Stihl chain saws. I found the book title "Chain Saw Service Manual (10th ed.)" on Amazon. Is that the best book around for learning how to fix saws yourself?

Thanks
Tom

Tom (handle Thompson1600) have free Stihl service manuals and parts list on his website. Didn't want to post the link here, please search for him instead.

That book contains good but very basic info. Most of the useable info is in specifications not how to.

Yeah, go with the Stihl manuals you can download from Tom, or get on ebay. The info is specific to each saw, with pictures. They're based on the premise that you have a basic undertanding of how things work, and how to fill in some of the blanks in the instructions, but they're good, and if you're any good at all behind a wrench, they'll do you fine. If you're gonna work on your saw yourself, that's cool, but get your parts from you dealer, or at least patronize him somehow. That way he'll still be in business when you need him!

Take care all,
Jeff

I wasn't able to find one book that

covers everything that you need to know. I have the book that you mentioned, & it's very general. The Stihl disks are available on the internet, & are very detailed, but they are directed more to experienced technicians. There are other books with good information, but they are now very dated. I don't have the book nearby, but I think the author is Charles?? Self.

There are some small engine repair guides out there, but I have no idea if they cover chainsaws, or in what depth.

If you find any good books that we haven't covered, I'd like to hear more about them.

Why not, is there some rule here that I don't know about?
That link is posted in several treads at this forum already. I posted it as late as yesterday, in the "Stihl MS 340....." tread.
