Bought a used 066 today. Has dual port muffler. I will be running 32" and 42" bars on it mostly in Doug fir and Cedar. Will be using square ground chisel. Would I be better off running full comp or skip. Leaning to full skip in Cedar as it soft but seams to clog things up. It should arrive in a couple days. Will finally have a big bull in the collection. Does any one have one that has been ported by WHS thinking of having it stage 2 modded. Does anybody know the differences between the 066 and the 660. This one looks like a late 066 has compression release and plastic looks like a 660.

You will have no trouble with full comp with those bars in that wood. I pull a 36" full comp buried in oak with no issues.

Ditto what old saw said,,, I run a 30 & a 32" full comp in oak, have never had a problem, for my modded Saw if I had a bigger bar (which I'm looking for a good used 36" or 42" ES) I'd run it too when Flush cutting stumps getting ready to grind,,,,I have a stage I WHS and it is definitly is stout, wish I had gone Stage II If I do another it will definitley be A II!!!!! :chainsaw: :chainsaw: :chainsaw:

Consensus is that full comp is fastest cutting chain configuration, except for long bars pulling through softwood, where chip clearance becomes an issue. I run full comp on up to 24 inch, semi skip in 24 sometimes, and up to 28, and full skip on 30 and up......sometimes full skip on 28...it has less cutters so is quicker to sharpen. But, my guess is, less cutters dull worse than more cutters....not about to test to find out though.:monkey:

I run skip on my 42 inch bars. Not because it pulls a little easier, but more because I have about eight 135 drive link chains I run on them, and full comp would take longer to sharpen than I have patience. Skip cuts almost as fast in soft woods.

32 inch I run both ways, whichever is handier in the chain bag.

Yes, I feel in clean wood full comp lasts a little longer. But hit some concrete in a tree and you got a lot of grinding to do.

The 2002 (roughly) onwards 066 and MS660 are identical except for the model plate. Chain -either...

makes you wonder why the model name change hehe. Ever run across the older 066 setups with no decompression valve? I've only seen one, maybe 2 in the last yr.

I run dual port 660's with a 32" bars and 3/8 full skip round chisel chains and they work good. I find that most loggers around here run the full skip also. I run the 3/8 because its not as hard on the bearings as the 404 and it pulls chips fine. Since you are from Enumclaw, you'll find that most guys up here run the full skip on a 32" bar, thats about the most common setup on a 66.
As far as mods, i would try and get the big bore kit from baileys before you start pumping it up, put on an aftermarket high flow air filter setup and then take it from there.

I have an older 066 redeye without a decomp. It also does not appear to have an adjustable oiler. It has the diagram to adjust the oiler on the bottom of the saw, but I have not found any screws to turn to adjust. Is this something that they did? or am I just an idiot for not finding it. By the way, my local stihl dealer could't find it either. Any thoughts?

Don't bother with a big bore. All reports I've heard put them about the same as stock in terms of performance. Porting is where the gains are. Dean does good work. To keep from repeating myself:

As far as skip/full comp, run skip. 32" full comp buried in cedar has trouble clearing the chips, I wouldn't want to try it on anything longer.

Saw arrived.

Got the 066 today. Got it off e-bay. Runs great. Revs and cuts like a Banshee. Nice dual port muff.32 " bar. Was leaning twords skip chain as I do a lot of cedar cutting and yes cedar seems to clog. Only had a chance to run it in some 20" maple and that doesn't even think of slowing the chain down. Love the sound of that dual port. Getting more cool saws only makes it worse cause you know there are a lot of cool saws you still havent run.
