Now that my wife is on leave from her job for a while, she has been handling the chore of keeping the bank account straight and she's been doing a decent job..In fact almost too good..She flipped her lid when I came home with those two 660's the other week,so I had to explain to her why I needed those particular saws, and since I know what makes her tick(most of the time),I didn't have much of a problem convincing her..Yesterday I had a 440 seize up on me.That is really no big deal,I have six brand new ones, but I have decided to do this.
Since they are discontinuing the 440,I wanna keep a few of em' in mint condition. So I'm gonna actually use three of the six new ones I have.I have two others that are in service, and only about six months old,so they will last a while yet.It should be a while before I expire those three that I plan on using,to mention,I have three more on order that should be here in a week or so.
With that said,I have compared the 441 to the 575 over and over again. It's a very close race.In the end,I favor the 575 just because it feels better in my hands. So just to replace the blown 440,I decided on another 575.I figured that I had better jump at the chance to buy a new saw because it looks like the days of buying new saws on impulse are over with my wife watching the funds a little closer. But as long as I trash one first,I can convince her to let me replace it..The problem is that most of my saws are fairly new with the exception of the 385's,and they are runnin' so strong,it doesn't look like they will give it up for a while.

How did you kill the 440?

It was run a good bit buy a former employee who had a bad habit of running a saw all day long with a dull chain.I'm not always around,so it's hard to keep on top of it all the time..I let him go back in January,I've been using that same saw ever since and you could tell by running it that it's days were numbered..I was even running it a little rich to keep the RPM's down and milk for as long as I could...Yesterday I was using it to finish cutting up a big water oak that had to be cut into small peices and wheelbarrowed out...I guess it decided that it had had enough.

I failed to mention that back in the summer of 05' this same guy blew up a brand new MS460.I had only run the saw twice. This was during his second week working for me.He said he was good at running and sharpening saws.I watched him closely for the first week, and he did ok.So on Monday of the second week,I left him on a job where a bunch of white oaks had to be fallen and cut into firewood..It was a shame to waste all that timber, but the homeowner had enough $$$ to make me see it his way.Knowing that this guy wasn't a good faller,I went in and fell all of the trees for him so he could get to work..I left him two new chains,a box of files and of course a whole jug of gas and oil.He didn't get done the first day,so I dropped him off the next day to finish, and I got a phone call about 2 that afternoon saying that the saw had quit....The paint was completely worn off of the guide bar, again, this was a brand spankin' new saw and I don't think I have ever worn the paint all the way off of a Stihl guide bar..The edges on the chain were rounded over, and his excuse was that he was trying to get the last tree done and only had a few cuts to make so he didn't take the time to stop and re-sharpen the chain..I let this one slide, and lucky for him,my dealer was able to repair the saw under waranty since it was less than thirty days old.I raised hell at the guy,and he said he'd never do it again. He did OK for a while,he worked with me mostly from then on..But during the last little while he worked for me,I caught him a couple of times running this same 440 with the chain so dull it would hardly cut..I left him and another guy to start on a small lot clearing job back in January, and he blew up another 440 I had.So that was his final straw.Maybe I'm wrong, but is it too much to ask of my helpers to stop for ten minutes to sharpen their chain if it needs it?His excuse was always that he was so close to being done,he figured he could just make one or two more cuts...That doesn't wash when the paint is gone off of the guide bar that was there the morning before and there is also blue spots on it.I'm all for being productive, but I've never rode their ass to where they thought they couldn't stop and give their saw or whatever they may be using whatever it needs.

At some point you don't "ask" them... you have to tell them... like this :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored:  :buttkick: :buttkick:

The other biggest problem of this guy was he was cocky, and I guess he thought I'd never do anything to him....I was to the point with him that there was no asking involved..It involved:censored: :censored:  :buttkick:.There towards the end I was trying to just force him to quit...Not only was he hard on saws, one of my guys told me that he was too rough on the chipper, and several times he got wood jammed up in it that was too big to pass through...A saw is one thing, but a $32,000 chipper, there probably wouldn't have been any words exchanged..Just a good ole' fashioned ass whoopin'.I can tolerate a little ignorance when dealing with someone new who doesn't know better, but it's almost like this guy did alot of this on purpose.Maybe so he could see how much he could get away with,I don't know....In fact,he once while he was working for me got stopped and arrested for driving with a suspended liscence..He told the cop that picked him up that he was being an ???????,and that his boss's wife (my wife) would have him out in less than an hour, and she would have him fired.....Unbeknown to him,she always hated his ass,and would have arrested him herself,to mention she has no more position of authority than the cop who picked him up did.The judge let him go home the same night, then he was promptly trying to talk my wife into seeing if she could have the charges dropped.....She was actually gonna try and help him out a little...Until she found out what he told the other officer, and she also found out that he had two previous DUI's...That is just how cocky and ignorant he was...I'm still trying to figure out how I managed to keep him for nearly two years.

fired

I would have fired the guy on the spot when he blew up the 460 with a dull chain. I am very fussy about my chains being sharp. Timber, you did nothing wrong in firing him. The thaught of a brand new 460 or 440 blowing up makes my ears bleed. If I would've been in your shoes there would have been some serious:buttkick: :buttkick: :buttkick: :censored: :censored:   :)

Can't do it...I've got too many Stihl's layin' around for parts...Even though I favor husky's..I can't completely phase out the Stihl's.It would cost too much money....If one of my new 660's blow up in the next year..Someone is going to have it permanantly implanted in a very unpleasant spot.
Let me know if you have any saws you want to sell. Did you read your last pm from me?
thanks

Yeah...I got it....I'm not interested in selling anything right now except for a 385.
