Had a fire last night in the fireplace. Just an open fireplace no insert. Today I noticed something brown in there. Asked the wife what she put in there. Nothing, she says. I look and it's is brown ashes. About the conistency of a very light, dry clay. I've never seen this. Ideas?

I wouldn't worry about it too much KMatt. I've also got an open fireplace and seen all sorts of different ash colors. That's just the nature of the wood you're burning. Where I get concerned is when I shovel out ashes and see something metallic. I'll sit there looking at it for a second, thankfully my saw and splitting ax missed it!

Thanks for the response. I've burned a lot of wood in my life. Probably 95% oak, and never seen anything but grey ashes. This year I am more diverse. More cherry than anything and some persimmon. Maybe that's what it's from.

Off topic but this year was the first time I ever split persimmon and maybe it's just the few trees I got, but it is a friggin bear to split. Makes oak seem like a breeze.
