The Company I work for just got a hold of a used city boomtruck. I think its a skywalker, 65ft. To get the truck regestated here in Calif. they want several thousand dollars.(Its a 10 year old truck) My Boss wants to get around the fee by putting the boom on a flatbed trailer with stabilizers, weighing down the front over the 5th wheel with concrete. Any body ever seen this done? I my self rarely use the booms we already have, but I wonder if this is a safe practice for our boom truck guys to use this new trailer boom If it is jerry rigged. The boss is pretty slick with equipment, but he's old school, and doesn't always go the safest route on things. Any input would be helpfull. Thanks. P.S. He has access to a trailer that has the stabilizers on it already.

Sounds like a neat plan, until someone gets killed. Suggest he contact the manufacturer and get their input on it. 65' is a long way down but you will hit the ground before you can think about what went wrong.

Liability, Liability, Liability

It doesn't seem like it would take much, right? First off is it a Skyworker? If so, it's not 10 years old, probably more like 20. How do you plan on mounting it? It must be on a subframe. What's the GVW of the trailer and the truck hauling it? As mentioned before, how are you going to power it? What happens if it falls? See above. Modifying any manufacturers original design is a big no-no. What may seem like a easy set up may not turn into one when something happens with a home made contraption. I'm not trying to undermine your or your employers abilities or skills but this is never a cost effective or saftey approved way of going around things. The cost of getting it registered would never out way the cost of an accident or lawsuit. Try your best to talk him out of it, and if you can't let us see some pics of this contraption!
