I have several older bucket trucks with diesel engines. With the excessive amount of idling the average bucket truck sees a 100 hour interval is a good idea. The problem with idling is the engine temperature will drop, and the fuel within the cylinder will not fully combust. Fuel will "seep" around the rings and make it into the crankcase, dissolving into the oil. This will not dirty the oil but will decrease it's lubricating capability and cause premature engine wear. So, even though your oil insn't black it still often requires changing due to fuel dissolution.
