Build me a one man wrecking machine so I can get wood myself (which I think alot of us guys do). I am moving back to Salt lake city for work reasons and have access to lots of metal and welders. I want to stay busy between trips back home to see the family. I have a 3/4 ton that I know is good for alot more then that as I have modified it beyond 1 ton specs.

I am thinking something like a 7x18 trailer with 24" sides with dual 5k brake axles. A reciever on each side to accept a trailer hitch mounted 1500lb winch (pull the logs to me) and 3 top mounted recievers per side to accept one of those cheap portable northern tool cranes.

I am way out there??

Lets hear you ideas.

7 x 18 with 48" sides so you can really stack it on there (stake pockets would work if you are taking it home in log length). Of course, if you have big wood out there then it may be interesting trying to stack that big stuff.

Get dual 6000# or 7000# braked axles. If you are hauling green wood and filling your trailer you will need the extra capacity.

Buy a bigger winch as well. That little 1500# winch will not last long and (again if you into big wood, esp green) there's a good chance that it will not have the power to pull up the big stuff. I have winched with a 2500# winch and it struggled with some green birch - and we don't even have big wood up here (it was a 16' log with a butt diameter of about 15"). Even if you are trying to pull big rounds that "only" weigh about 400# your winch will strain.

Again, don't buy too cheap when it comes to the portable crane. Buy bigger and you will be much more pleased with what you can do with it.

Good luck and post pics of the build!

i've got an 18x8 foot wide by 5 foot tall gooseneck i'd sell.

a pair of warn 8000 pound winches mounted on top of the gooseneck to reel the logs closer.....
