Copper is great for air, but it should be brazed, not soldered... Compression, or flair fittings are ok as well, but they start to add up...

This is a very small shop - steel hard lines would't take more than a couple hours to install.

Copper costs more, plastic requires hard mounts or your quick connects will wiggle and fatigue on you.

I have 120' of 1" main, with 1/2" drops several places in my shop. I've never regretted going steel.

I had a good supply of 1-1/4" galvanized pipe in 4' sections so ran those up the wall then down the center of the shop with tee branching off the top then 1/2" line to wherever I wanted a drop and ran the 1/2" down to those points.

I did incorporate a "drip leg" in the vertical line going up the wall with a manual drain in the bottom.

So far I have had zero issues with air in the lines regardless of what the weather conditions have been.

Galvanized has the potential to flake. No real threat to air tools, but a big no-no with gas.
