Well...a week or so after discovering this fourm, and I have finally finished reading the first few pages worth of posts. There are certainly lots of knowledgeable folks posting here, and I have learned a lot. Here's a question for the experts:

Has anyone here ever heard of Bultaco chainsaws? Back in the early to mid 70's I was big into motocross racing. I remember an ad in Dirtbike, or MotoCross Action for Bultaco motorcycles that featured a photo of a Bultaco chainsaw, don't remember any details about the ad, but do remember the saw was pretty sharp looking, it was painted the same blue as some of the Bul Mx bikes.
Buls were Spanish bikes, others included Ossa, Montesa. Did any of these companies make saws?
How about Maico (german)? I was a CZ man myself, don't think they made any saws, but anything is possible.

I believe that ad wasn't expected to market a Bultaco chain saw, but to poke fun at Husqvarna. Husqvarna has since sold it's bike operation to Cagiva from italy, and the Bultaco family drove the bike operation face-first into the dirt after Senor Bulto died.

I'm not sure, but I believe I've seen reference to Bultaco making at least a brief exploratory foray into the chainsaw thing way back in the '60's. Also lawnmowers, and other uses for their engineering and mfg. talent. I doubt if they ever made it out of Spain, however, and there may have only been a few prototypes, no production models made.

I know that Bultaco ad, but it sure wasn't for chainsaws. They were taking a jab at Husqvarna. The ad had a photo of a chainsaw (looked like a Poulan) with "Bultaco" on the bar. Below that, the ad said something like "No way" then "We only build motorcycles."

As I say, I can't remember details of that ad. I would have been around 15 yrs old at the time, and if it the ad was a jab at Husky, I guess it went over my head. Even though I may have missed the thrust of the ad, I think I would have noticed if the saw pictured was a doctored up Poulan, I have never been far enough removed from the saw scene not to be able to identify a particular brand of saw.
Too bad my mom threw out all my old Dirt Bike mags, I would like to be able to find that ad.

I've seen that ad on e-bay more than once in the last year. If you want one bad enough just keep checking e-bay.

sedanman,

I can't believe you have seen that ad on ebay! It is truly amazing the variety of stuff you can find advertised there.
I don't particularly want a 'hard copy' of the ad, I would just like to take a look and see if the ad was a dig against Husky, or an ad whose purpose was to show that Bultaco was more than just bikes. Since no one here has seen or heard of a Bultaco saw, I am inclined to belive it was an anti-Husky ad.
Regarding bike manufacturers and saws, my fantasy saw would be a 360cc CZ Red frame, Falta Replica saw!

Way off topic here but, a friend of mine was complaining that the local parts house quoted him nearly 400 bucks for a water pump for his Allis-Ghalmers forklift. I said "Fire up the computer, let's check e-bay" sure enough a N.O.S. water pump for $41.00!

The great buying/selling frontier. I've gotten stuff on eBay for $10 that they'd charge $200 around here, and sold stuff for $200 that they'd toss in my area.

The Bultaco saw(s) in question may be Alpina chain saws. Alpina was an italian foray into medium to large chain saw manufacturing circa 1967-1972. They made two good, big, heavy timber falling saws; the AP-90, and the AP120. Both saws are listed on Mike Acre's Collector's website. They were patterned somewhat after a Bultaco motorcycle engine, though with a more horizontal engine design. I am looking to buy or trade for one AP90 and twp AP120's if anyone ever stumbles across them. Thanks, JJ
