looking at a late 90's GMC C6500 Cat diesel Chip Truck w/man cab. 10-12k range. Need to cut out door of man cab and build a ramp for my Bobcat MT 52. Need advice! Its a big decision for me, and at this point in my growth, I would benefit greatly. I've been chipping with my bc1000 into my 14' dump trailer.

depends how late in the 90's the truck is, if it has the 3116 engine i would stay away !. sounds like a great idea to remove the man cab. i wouldnt cut the door off. i would take the whole man cab off and start fresh

I heard the same thing about 3116 Cats. However, I bought a Kodiak with that engine anyway. Mine had 327,000 on it when I bought it. I ran it about 2 years, pulling heavily loaded gooseneck trailers and never had any problems.
I think they need a little more in the way of regular maint than some other similar size engines. If neglected, they get unhappy really fast. I don't know the history of mine, but it ran strong, got pretty good fuel mileage, and I never had any problems with it.

I have an an ALOC 50 footer forestry unit that the torque converter got hot on and wiped out the transmission and the thrust bearing for the crank. Allison 545 with 1991 Cat 3116 . Now the truck just sits here. Any ideas?

I am a big International fan. If I can't get a DT466 or a DT360, I'd opt for a Cummins. The Cats have the best network of parts that there is hands down, problem is, you pay heavily for it. I would also make sure that you are getting a manual gearbox. If someone can't drive a manual trans, I don't need them using anything else that I own either. Slush boxes are 3 times the price to rebuild and only last half as long. Get a good Eaton/Fuller trans, not a 5 speed split rear truck.

Ive had the 466m and 360m. I agree. I am also lookkng to turn up my 360m a bit. It's a dog on the hills with the truck alone.
