I think I may log a couple of farms I have.. the biggest trees I have found are red oak about 36 inches at the base, average is going to be 24 inches.. my big saw is getting some age on it and I may buy a new one.. what would you guys buy if you were in my shoes? thanks!

Jonsered 2166(72 cc) for $600ish. It will pull a 24 inch bar no problem. Trees that big are 70 cc or bigger territory.
I agree with Cheesecutter, go for a saw in the 70cc range with a 24/25" bar. You can't go wrong with a Jred 2166/72.

Whatever 70+ cc saw pleases you, preferably Husqy-Jonny/Dolmar/RedMax/Efco. Forget service accessibility on the big Stihls, IMHO.

For safety & productivity, I'd suggest a light & nimble 50 cc (or thereabouts) limbing saw. Even if you're just trimmong off the tops, or harvesting them for fuel, there'll be a lot of work for such a saw. A polesaw is very useful for trimming tops, also. Another safety & productivity booster.

You can always cut smaller trees with a large saw easier than cutting bigger trees with a small saw. I really like my 395XP. It is big, heavy and really sucks the fuel, but it can cut like nothing else I have ever used. It cuts more wood in the same amount of time as my 371xp, and with a 28" bar the 395xp seems like it is well balanced. I run both 28" and a 32" bars. When it gets heavy I set it down for awhile, but I will come back to it time and again. It has some serious grunt to it. I am able to take home wood that others pass by because of its large size.

Brand new? A 390xp...

with that said, the tradin post here has good deals, just the good ones go fast! Be prepared to pounce on something if you want it, a real good deal on a dolkita 7901 just sold. There's more just peruse the pages, seeing a stihl 660 there and some others.

Good advice. If you have lots of big wood like that I'd go for a larger saw.

If you are just planning to use the saw for just this one project you could get nice resale out of a big Husky or Stihl, perhaps the others too but I'm not as familar with those.

On a budget? A used 394xp is about the best bang for the buck there is. Independently wealthy? MS661 R.
I'm lazy and like to do all my falling cuts from one side of the tree, so I like a longish bar and a wrap handle

I just bought the 2166 Johnsonred from TSC. It was 629.99 on sale and if you use your TSC credit card you get a year interest free. Saw works great just get rid of chain that comes on it.

Just curious what your big saw is? Maybe new ring and some mods then you've saved some money while reviving and improving what you have.

Dave, its a 80 cc echo.. been running it for probably 15 years.. replaced a piston in it about 10 years ago..

Check out the thread in chainsaw about Snelling's dyno results for the 461. Very impressive.

I think mine might be looking at a little tune up in the future. Not that it needs it but........ Dam CAD. Gotta try it I guess. :dumb:

looking to add another saw to the pile as well... what about the husky 576 to replace a wore out (60cc)jons2159? looking for speed plus the bar length to be mostly 18" to maybe 24" when needed... 2159 was the go to saw in deep snow cutting conditions, lite an easy to handle!(14" to 20" wood)
