Can I convert an 028 to side tension?

Do you mean a traditional chain tensioner verses a tool free chain tensioner?

If so, yes it is possible.

The front facing tensioner is different than what I was referring to. To make it a side tensioner would take some more work. Maybe some one with a 028 or 280 can chime in.

I have an 028 super that I just ran. Yes, the front facing adjuster is a bit of a pain, since all my others are on the side by the bar nuts. But, looking at it, I don't see how this would by very easy to mod, or even possible. I will just live with it on the front. Besides, I only adjust once or twice, before the chain comes off for a formal sharpening or change out anyway.

This thread ties in with something I saw today on a 028 Wood Boss, one of the old ones. I saw it in a pawn shop and it looked pretty good but I noticed the chain tensioning screw was at an angle so that it was up against the bar. It was also seated in what looked to be a black plastic collar. This collar appeared to be in between the screw and sprocket cover. Looking at it touching the bar and that collar I thought maybe this was a home repair done my Joe Blow,l but I haven't had this Stihl. What about it guys?

Cool. That doesn't surprise me much. But what about the screw being at an angle to the point that it's touching the bar?

You can only convert it to side if it is a late 028 with the provision for it in the crankcase. The very last 028's were side tensioners, but they changed that area of the crankcase before hand.

In order to do this swap you have to have a case that will accept the side tensioning hardware. Most 028 cases are not setup to be side tensioning saws. I do know it came on some 028 saws but I don't know when that started. Most likely the newest 028 Super saws.

Alb beat me to it!

The 028 and the 280 has absolutely nothing to do with each other, except for the approximate posision in the model line-up.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up.

OP should take a pic of the clutch side without the cover, then we can see of the space is there in the case.

Here is what it looks like on one that cannot be converted.

I think we're getting around to the answer. Mine isn't early, and it isn't late, kind of mid pack production. So I suppose it won't be happening. Wonder if a chimp with a dremmel could make it happen?

That sounds like trouble

Ok. Now we need a pic of one that CAN accept a side tensioner. Pretty sure mine looks different than that one, and it has the side tensioner. Not sure what I have. Getting a pic right now would be a major undertaking.

Totally understand that. If it weren't for the phone app I doubt I would go through the trouble of posting a photo.
