Totally understand that. If it weren't for the phone app I doubt I would go through the trouble of posting a photo.

I will get a pic tomorrow after I dig the saw out after moving my truck back out into the slushy icy mess.

Here is my 028 super aveq

Yes that can be converted. Looks like parts needed are

1125 007 1021
1122 664 2200
9041 216 0630
1125 640 1900
1125 664 1400
1122 664 1001

Hope this helps anyone in the future

I have an 028 Super with the front tensioner screw. I have no idea what mine looks like under the cover. If it could be converted, that would be interesting...hmmm...
For the most part, I think if the side tensioner was important I'd just look for a nice 026 and replace the saw. I've seen a lot of 026 saws on the market but prices are running between $200 and $350.

Thanks for the help and part numbers! I will price it out and see if its worth it. I just may do it, my 028 is in good condition, plenty of life left, and i like the way it handles. Thanks again!

Sucks Stihl doesn't make a kit to convert to the side adjust. You have to order all those parts.

There is a store in the PNW that sells used (some are new) chainsaw parts. They show a kit for the 028 side tensioner. The picture of the "kit" only shows two pieces, the ones with the gears on them. The p/n of the "kit" happens to be the first one that JOHNSOBRI posted with his list of numbers. They also list other saws that the "kit" fits as being the 024,026,028,034,044,046,064 and066. They don't state this kit as being a conversion so I'm thinking it's parts to replace the ones that are on a saw already equipped with this style, BUT, if those same parts do indeed fit all those other saws, it may make finding the parts you need off
of a donor saw a lot easier.

You also have to drill a hole in the cover or swap the cover to one with the hole.

Think I found the part # for a kit, contains 3 parts: spur gear, adjusting screw and O ring. 1125-007-1021
the spur gear as it's called, has the slot where you stick the screwdriver blade.

The parts I listed are everything you need to make the swap happen there is also a part number for the new metal side plate with the provision for the side mount adjuster.

I just just stating I was upset there is not a kit that includes all the needed parts to do the conversion you kinda have to piece it together.

One of the part numbers supplied is listed as a kit but in only includes a few parts needed to complete the conversion.

If you plan on doing the conversion you will need to use all the part numbers listed that is all you need.

New to the site and sorry to resurrect this old thread, but can this conversion also be done to an 038? It looks like it can be done with a small bit of dremil work? Thanks.

Thanks for resurrecting this thread. I am in the process of acquiring an 028 (deal made, just haven't picked it up yet). I hope this one is convertible as I will likely make the parts swap if so!

Has anyone made any headway with this? I'm actually curious how all the pieces fit into the 028 that*can* be converted. Just to give myself an idea as to whether or not I want to try custom fabricating my 038 to side tensioner. Lol

So, I was looking at the side of the 038 where the tension screw goes. I did a little research and found this from the 029. It looks like, if you drilled a hole in the 038, that it would just about go right in. Any thoughts?

I’ve just acquired an 038 magnum which I love except for front chain tensioner so your posts interest me gratekt

My side cover comes with the slot to place the screw driver but no actual mechanism to tension the chain.

What did you end up doing ?

I’d really like to get side tensioning working as it makes a lot of sense. The front tensioner is very annoying.
