Any thoughts on how often you should fit new diaphragms etc? I know it probably depends on useage. This saw's about 7 years old, had periods of heavy use plus periods of inactivity, mostly used for snedding. Never sees extreme heat or cold, although has seen plenty of action in rain, mud, etc. I've never touched the carb since I bought it.

Personally, I would use it until it starts running bad. It is
best not to screw with anything that is running well. I know this
will stir up a lot of rancor, but diaphragms are not really a
preventative maintenence item, and when people take apart
the carb on a good running saw, it usually means problems.
The vast majority of carb rebuilds would run the same reusing
the old diaphragms. If really old and stiff, or cracked, that is
another thing, but in general, if the saw runs good, leave it
alone.

Synthetic oil does make diaphragms brittle and crack easily,
due to their molecular construction, and the over cooling of
the powerhead in general. So with synthetic mixes, you should
replace the diaphragms with every tankful.

A good splitfire plug dipped in slick 50 will counteract this
phenomenum.

Sorry, it is winter and I wish to start some trouble.

I don't change them unless needed.
Keep a spare for each saw on hand though,

Fish, thanks for the tip, but which end do you dip, or do you just dip the whole thing? Is it OK to use Duralube if I can`t get any Slick 50, will performance suffer substantially? I have started smearing my flocked filters in STP and I think my saws are going to last longer now, so I want to squeeze all the performance I acn out of them. It does make them really hard to start but I tweaked them a little by running the filters a little loose on the carb throat, maybe the Splitfire will fix them. Thanks again Fish. Russ

Those felt Stihl filters are kind of hard to squeeze out what with the plastic body and all... ;)
Smearing them with STP? ...seems to me it would just collect a lot more fine dust and clog up to be just about impossible to clean.

Nothing like dipping your plug in a slick one.

Oh... we were discussing dried out diaphragms...

this could get ugly.

I don't know what US loggers say, but it's cutting all the branches off the tree you've just felled.

Thanks for the other advice. This saw's running as well as can be expected..I change the plug, AV mounts and fuel pickup regularly, just wondered about parts for the carb, although the idea of leaving it alone appeals. I'd be worried about letting crud in when taking it apart.
