Just got a pair of the carbon fiber spurs!
Unblievable!
Mark C. did not come close to describing just how light they are.
For example, I have a pair of the T2s. I use the super wrap pads. The T2s have a titanium shank. The adjustable part of the spur is the upper sleeve which the pads are threaded onto. This sleeve is made of steel.
Over all the T2s are not that much different in weight from say the Bashlin spurs. I have those as well and when I weigh them in my hands I dont feel too much difference.
The carbon fiber Geckos are one piece spurs. That is to say the pad and the shank are all one piece. The shank and the pad support are made of carbon fiber. The padding is velcroed onto the pad support.
The lower strap for the foot is standard with a crome (?) plated eye that the split ring of the strap is threaded onto.
What this means is the overall weight of these spurs is dramactilly lighter than any other spur I have ever seen or used. Including the original Geckos.
I will try them out tomorrow, slaughter some helpless dead tree in the name of science
One note about the Geckos. Sherrill from my understanding got a complaint from a climber who broke a set. This climber has a rep. as being extremly hard on equipment and had modified the Geckos by drilling a hole or holes through the shank.
So Sherrills did a Rockwell hardness testing on them and found out that the hardness rating was below what the manufacturer had stated. Hence the recall. And I am glad they did.
The new carbon fiber Geckos are made out of a different material and from what I can see are made well. (Just a laymans opinion)
When I got the box from FedEx I thought what is in here? The box was just too light. I unpacked it and I swear it seemed like the packaging material was heavier than the spurs themselves! They are lighter than a pair of sneakers.
Got them from Greg Good. I think he will sell them...
I'll post my opinion of them after I try them out.
