My 7015 stump grinder blows hyd. fluid from behind the O-rings on the "cutter head speed" and "ground speed" adjustment knobs. When this happens I have to replace the O-rings on the removeable valve. The newly installed o-ring would last anywhere from a week to 2 weeks. Now they last a day or two.
Anyone else having this problem, or know what is causing this? the Hyd fluid was replaced and filters changed yearly. I use rubber, metric O-rings as specified by Carlton.

Mine did that. I found that it takes a special "hardened rubber" type o ring. If you are using an o ring that is kind of soft, then you have the wrong type, and it will not handle the pressures. I took mine to a hydraulic repair shop to get this figured out. Once I got the correct o rings, I never had another problem. None of the correct o rings were available at tractor repair shops, like our Kubota, JD, MF, or NH dealers. I only found them at the hydraulic shop.

Thanks Mowingman!! I was buying these o-rings 19X24X2.5MM, online from monster fastener. Com. As they were the only vendor i found that sold metric o-rings. I will try to find another vender. Were the o-rings you got black rubber, or some other material, (Viton) or color? Thanks for your help.
Mark

They are black. They are not very soft at all, but really kind of like a hard rubber, ( but they may be made of some other material). The o ring is still flexible, but if you compare it to a regular o ring that you might get at a tractor dealership, you can tell it is much more stiff and dense. They are a special kind for high pressure hydraulic applications. The guy who owns the small hydraulic rebuild shop here, told me you will usually not find these type of hydraulic o rings, except at hydraulic repair shops. I even tried our Bobcat dealer, and they only had the soft ones. I was about to pull my hair out, until I got with this hydraulic repair guy.
Hope this helps,
Jeff

OK thanks. I will visit my local hydraulic shop. It is frustrating when the plume of hyd oil sprays onto a customers driveway or walkway! My local dealer called Carlton so i could be sure i was using the right size o-ring,(which i was not). He never mentioned the hardness. Makes perfect sense now. Thanks again for the insight!
Mark

one more thing I thought of. When you get the correct o rings, they will have a "harder feel" when you tighten the connection down onto it. I can not tell you how tight to go, but you just need to give the fitting a good "snug' tightening. Don't over tighten and really mash that o ring. Again, this is just kind of a judgment thing.
Jeff

Hi Mark,

You need a 90 durometer o'ring and the 90 indicates the hardness of the o'ring.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Dave, I went to my local Hydraulic shop, Steward-Hunt, as Jeff suggested. They were kind enough to hook me up with a half dozen O-rings that are definitely stiffer than the ones I had been using. It doesn't seem as though anyone rates O-rings with a durometer spec. that I could find. I'm sure this will cure the isuue I was having with the fluid spraying out of the manifold (block). I will report back in a week or two. Again guys, thanks a lot for your help. -Mark

Well, its been 3 weeks and over 60 stumps and no hydraulic fluid spraying out of the back of the machine. The harder O-rings was the solution. Hope this thread helps someone else with a carlton grinder... Mark

"Got it checked with a hydraulic repair specialist , once got the correct o rings & fixed them, not facing the problem again."

This is common on the Carltons. For my TRX I keep a box of #6 buna black O-rings and they usually last about 12 months.
