I have bought chain locally for a lot of years, paying extra, but expecting good service and pleasant conversation. For a long time I did business with a little one-man shop...he sold Homie, Jonsered, and Husky, as well as Carlton and Total chain. Husqvarna loaded him up with lawnmowers and suggested he'd be better off without any red saws on the rack. With all his money tied up in Husky product, he couldn't afford to do much business elsewhere, his Jonsered sales and service dried up, and as he was turning 70, just decided to give it up.
After a couple of years two fellows in another town near me set up to service Jonsereds and the rest of the stuff Tilton sells. Also Briggs, MTD, you know...neighborhood lawnmower shop. Good folks, I thought...trying to set up a real class act. I got kinda friendly with one of the partners and started buying all my OPE stuff there.
Was in today to get some chains and a short bar for a little Jonsered 2040. My buddy was gone...sold out to his partner. Grumpy old man at the parts counter and an arrogant kid selling new merchandise
Bar is special order from Oregon...3-4 weeks. Chains are special order too..."nobody stocks "foreign" .050 ga chain in .325". Asked salesman about new Jonsered 2156 saw to go with all my other red saws: Oh, forget that saw...it's just a 2159 with the catalytic muffler...retails out at $600...way too much money".
"Why not take a Look at these new Cub Cadet chainsaws..."
The customer is not supposed to know more about the product than the store staff. Salesman had never heard of Emak in Italy, and didn't know a transfer port from his anal sphincter. I asked to see the owner/mgr, who was out. I left my phone number, and he did call back tonight.
I was polite and calm; I'm sure we was expecting an irrational rant. But in the end I have to accept that business is business and I might have to take 2nd choices. I don't want to have to buy new bars...I run .050 in .325, .058 in 3/8, and I like carlton chain better. Since I probably only burn up 5 or 6 chains a year, total, it's hard to justify buying a breaker, spinner, and rolls of chain.
Anybody know a mail-order source of Carlton chain?
