Why would it be there if it wasn't functional?

To hang up on something?

To collect more debris in the cover?

Nah, it works. And I use it.

It just don't use me. :)

chain\brakes

If you could put that pic next to an old Poulan 4000 you'd have a good idea of what they thought a pro could handle without a chainbrake. The nylon/plastic flap on the 4000 could catch the the chain a time or two before it was usless and had to be replaced. I can tell you from personal use that the flap would catch the chain. A few years later all the saws had chainbrakes, I think it was about 1986 the last they made the 4000. Time was they thought the pro had the ability to handle a saw without a chainbrake. Todays saws are faster and more horsepower per pound than old saws. The chainbrakes have saved me from an injury more than once. PC or not, safe is better than stitches.

Don't you wish life had an "ESCAPE" key sometimes?

or maybe ALT_CTRL_DEL?

Yea, the Ctrl Alt Delete would be nice. Then (in windows 98 and up) that would open the task manager where you can stop a task, or start a new one. That way you would have all the work you ever wanted, without all the crap associated with life. :p

That would be nice.

brake

Stihl used to hae a chart that showed the comparison between the cost of saftey equipment and an emergency room visit. Needless to say the equipment was dirt cheap compared to the emergency room.

Chain brake? Nah , cut it off. It only might save a limb, hand, eye, etc. We got two of each anyway.

I really get scared when someone makes the statement they never get cut. No respect for the eqipment. You don't respect it and it won't respect you. Let's leave this saftey equipment in working order. Ain't NOBODY I know that I wish a Chain saw,Or any other logging or arborist , accident on.

I see lots of saws without the chain brakes around here. I picked up a load of wood for a local company yesterday and the guy had a brand new husky fresh from the shop, he was complaining that the shop wouldn't take it off for him, so he has to do it when he gets back to the shop. I looked around the job site -3 guys running saws not a chain brake in the yard, I think it is against the compnany policy to have chain brake. Oh well, he paid cash. Not a whole lot of brain power in that crew.

I have a question, a little off topic but still its about chainbrakes, i was a arb show back in the summmer, (oh those happy warm t-shirt days anyway) and i was chatting to a German guy and he told me that stihl export saws to Argentina without chain brakes as "people don't like them", i was amazed at this fact, but i wondered if anyone else has heard anything like that or was i being fed bull sh*t? as to a certain degree i find it hard to beleive in this day and age.

But lets face it life is strange and people in india for instance beleive that their god will protect them and drive some crazy a*s vehicles ie buses with no lights and poor excuses for brakes then over load em' with people and aniamls, can't imagine anything like that going through a town over here but it does happens around the world.

chain break

If there inst enough room between the handle and the chain break causing it to engage prematurely, then heat and bend it away into the correct position. or replace the plastic one with a home made metal one. I have seen both, and they both work properly. Just because it didnt come from factory, or because I didnt pay some over inflated price, because some schmuck that sits behind a desk creating new laws, to have products he has no Idea how to use, cross his desk for his god like thumbs up and seal of approval. dosnt mean it dosnt work. Remember chain breaks and many other "safety" items were created and Improved on by some guy F ing around in his garage, because he was tired of working with poorly crafted crap in the first place.

Modifying safety equipment or not following standards is walking into a minefield.

There's plenty of case law putting responsibility on the manufacturer because they designed something that "could" be modified so they were held responsible.

I have to wonder if Darin didn't chime in here to cover himself. I can see a savvy lawyer finding a discussion here about how to modify and holding the owner of the site responsible for the discussion. Stranger things have happened in court.

Think of this scenario. The owner of the saw mods the chain brake. The owner does this knowing that they have now terminated any responsibility on the manufacturer. Saw cuts and kills the owner. The owners heirs, who didn't put on the Teflon Responsibility Shirt, sue the manufacturer for thier loss. Like I said, stranger things have happened in court.

Rocky, discussing and sanctioning/supporting are two different issues. Both can have a space in the thread.

What's so strange about that? They think their god will protect them and they do crazy things. They also are the most populated country in the world. Looks like their god is doing a pretty good job! ;)
