I wanted to be able to run a shorter bar on my newly acquired Remington Super 990. The bar I had needed 78dl of .404. So, today was the day to try to find a chain.

The first dealer didn't have any .404 in stock and only have a guy at the parts counter on Saturday, who can't make up a loop.

Quick phone call, second dealer doesn't stock .404.

Third dealer probably had it but I couldn't get there before they closed at 1:00pm.

Fourth dealer closes at 4:00pm on Saturday and I still needed some other stuff so, off we go. They are a small Stihl dealer and mostly sell homeowner stuff, but he lets me dig through the boneyard whenever I want. I asked if they had any .404 chain, he said "I do, but I don't have any tie straps. I'll let you have it cheap, if you want it. Wanna see it?"

Can anyone ID these chains? I am guessing the Oregon is 52cp.

He also gave me a handful of .404 tie straps, they do not fit either of the above chains, the diameter is to large to go through the drivers on those. Any ideas what chain they may fit?

Anyone have tie straps to fit these?

Did I do ok for $50? :D

Yep... the .404 is chipper and 52 makes it .063... so yes it's 52CP

And the 1/2 is USELESS!!! Send it to me for disposal on a Mac 73 that uses 1/2" chain..:msp_w00t:

On the straps, the next size up is 1/2

I may have a saw or two that can use the 1/2". ;)

The straps are definitely .404. It's just that the middle of the pins/rivets, that the drive link should pivot on, is larger diameter than either of these Oregon or Stihl chains.

In the "good old days" manufacturers did a lot of things to make their products unique to make sure the customers kept coming back...

I have several different lots of .354 McCulloch chain intended to insure customers had to come back to McCulloch, except that one of the rolls came from a third party, not McCulloch.

Yeah you did OK Tom.....................and you suck!:D

Tell me something I didn't know.:D

Any ideas on the chain?

Keep the Oregon 52C and send the rest to me for closer examination. You'll (eventually) get most (OK maybe some) of it back with my findings.

For sure there'll be 95 less DL of Stihl .404 (actually 190DL less, as I need two loops......and possibly much less once I figure out what my 36" Homelite Hardnose takes) and several less feet of 1/2" (if I can find the Sandvik presets) on the reels......:D
