Chainsaw pricing.........

This may be a can of worms here. This has been talked about in one way or another before. Dealers will do what they can to keep a customer happy, but they've got to pay their own bills, and make staying in business worthwhile to themselves first. So I think pricing is entirely up to the individual dealer, how good the customer is, and how the customer approaches or expects a discount.

Thanks for the replies so far. I know that some businesses dicker on the prices of their stock, and some don't.

Autos, cycles, firearms to some degree, etc., price dickering is to be expected.

A friend of mine and his wife recently remodeled their home, thus calling for new furniture. Sticker price on all the furniture they chose was $12,000. But....bottom line "out the door" price ended up being under $9,500., after the dickering was done.

Last time I went in to Safeway to buy groceries, total came to $87.55. I told the clerk I'd give her $70.00 cash. For whatever reason, I was escorted out the door......minus my groceries....... :)

I have only bought 2 saws new, a 029 then traded it back for a 036Pro, I didn't argue the price on the 029 and when I took it to another dealer to trade it for the 036 he didn't even ask what I wanted for it he just made an offer (which turned out to be what I paid for it) I didn't try to argue down the price of the 036. When the deal was done and I went to leave he handed me some 2 cycle oil.

I just recently bought a new Husqvarna at my local dealer. The average on line price was $100 cheaper. I told him that and asked him what could he do to match it. He took $60 off his standard advertised price. I asked him to to throw in an extra chain and some oil and he did that as well. In the end he made it close.

The concessions you get will vary by dealer.

I dont really mind paying a few extra bucks, its more about the service AFTER I buy the saw that I care about. still, if they throw in an extra chain or two, and a little bar oil, or 2 stroke oil, I'm happy.

Stihl dealer here will not budge one penny off retail...and I'm a regular customer who has bought Stihl string trimmers (at full retail) and have brought in small-engine repair work.

This search will bring up an interesting thread: stealership.

Different dealers have different situations and policies. Seems to me a smart dealer would know when to throw in a few low cost/high markup/large sales volume items to at least make it look like they're giving you something really valuable.

When I bought the MS 440 the dealer knocked of like $20 and threw in a hand file. It was ridiculous, then he proceeded to "show me" how to run it at full throttle on a cold engine. I will never go back.

When I bought the FS 45 I paid full sticker even though he still had an old poster on the wall offering $10 off. I didnt argue it wasnt like I was buying a $700 saw.

In summary, I have tried to have good experiences with the local Stihl dealers, but I havent gotten much goodwill in return. If it wasnt for the quality that I hope is manufactured into a Stihl, I would just as well be buying from a chain store.

I am lucky to have a really good dealer close by that carries husky and stihl. They dont give much of a discount off of the msrp but the service, parts inventory, and advice makes it well worth it. They stock every model (I think) except the 088 stihl and 3120 husky. I have even traded saws there a few times and they have actually given me close to the same $$ as ebay would bring. Im sure they dont offer everyone that good of a trade in price but they know how I treat my saws. You end up paying less sales tax too. I have also had my share of bad experiences with dealers that knew less about their products than I did.

Different people from the same dealership will give different deals, too

When I bought my 372xp I didn't ask for any discounts. However, when I inquired about the price of extra chains and then asked for two, the salesman threw them in free, along with a gallon of bar oil. A six pack of two stroke oil came free with any two stroke engine purchase.

Having gone back to that dealership, wanting to support the good service I recieved, I had an encounter with another salesman who was downright hostile. I wound up leaving and not buying anything. I'm sure the same would have happened if I had chanced to buy the saw on a day when the second salesman was working.

I agree, I had the same experience at one shop , but I gave them another chance with a different salesman and things were better so I bought an FS45 and didnt ask for a price break, even though he had a promo poster on the wall offering a discount (the poster had expired). I think he should have given me the discount, but I wanted to let his true character shine through, he got the $10 and less respect.

I sell 2171s with a 20" bar for $589.95, they cost me $539.95. I make $50, how much oil and how many chains do you think I should "throw in"??

I agree, the "pro" customers expect immediate service, big discounts on parts and saws, and a complimentary backside massage every time they come in the door.

They take up a whole lot of time trying to weasel a good deal, they work on
their own stuff, then when they can't fix it, they bring me some rubble {saw parts}
in a box, and expect me to fix it while they have lunch.
You cannot tell them anything, as they are all professionals.

Oh, was this only a "dealer bashing" thread?

Sorry.

You should start exporting them back to Sweden, here they cost about $1150 and that is without bar and chain :/ Ok, some, or most, dealers will sell them for that price with bar and chain I guess, I don't know, haven't bought a 2171. (there is 25% VAT included in that $1150 btw)

We bought a 2152 for about $720 (converted from Swedish crowns), I can't believe that people try to knock a few more dollars off an already cheap product. YES, $600 for a super chainsaw is CHEAP, it will last YEARS, compared to other products and costs, the saw investment is nothing... :)

When I buy stuff from my local dealers, not just chainsaws, I hardly ever ask for the price to be reduced or free stuff thrown in. I just don't like haggling I guess.

3 extra chains and a 12 pack of oil should fynalize the deal.

Oh! Don't forget my cap also.  ;)
