Hi

Im trying to changte cylinder on a stihl 017, and i got as far as to the clutch, and i got kinda stuck, how am i supposed to remove it? is it meant to be screwed off or pulled off? seems kinda hard to screw it since the engine just keep turning.

Anyone have some tips and info about this?

Thanks in advance :)

Remove the spark plug and insert a piston stop. either a commercial one, or a hank of rope works just as well.
clutch should be left hand threaded, righty loosey.

Hi again

Thanks for ur answer.

I removed the clutch and got the cylinder out now, but when i took off the cylinder i found out the rod bearing was completely messed up, all the needels was laying in the buttom of the housing.

It doesnt seem like i can replace just the bearing, or can i?

anyone know where i can get a new crank/rod assembly cheap, that ships worldwide?

Thanks again for your help

You don't need a crank or bearings.. You have the early crank where the rollers are loose - and they dropped off when you took the engine apart!

Reposition them with heavy grease for assembly.

Hi again

Thanks for ur answer.

That thought crossed my mind, but how will they sit there under use? i guess they will since its meant to work that way tho.

So just apply grease and put it back together, put on the new cylinder and piston and its ready to go again?

Thanks again for ur help

yes... but it's very tricky to get it right... You need to make a wooden holder or whatever to keep the rod vertical - if it flops to the side, the rollers will fall out again.

Hi again

I got it back in place now, just hope i found all the needles that fell out, but the rod seem nice and tight so i guess their all there.

Thanks again for all ur help

One good thing about that needle rod bearing, i would think it takes lots and lots for it to wear out?
