hey guys. Just saw a ms 260 dirt cheap. Owner claims it only has 20 to 25 hours on it, but he says it is extremely hard to start when cold. Anybody know something I should know before going any further?

Has he got the L screw set right?

Could be a simple as that

Usually a hard starting 026 when cold is due to a faulty choke flap, some call it a button, in the air fliter. Its not unusal to see some now and that don't close all the way when choked and that leads to hard starting. Check the choke flap/button and the throttle shaft that flips it shut to make sure the choke is closing completely. If the carb is fully adjustable set the low screw out one full turn and go from there.

don't know about the choke. The guy that owns it came and picked up a big cedar this morning and had the saw with him. I tried to get him to leave it with me for a day or two, but he declined. The saw sounded like it was loading up without a heavy load, but it may have just been me (worked all night). All the externals look good, just don't know about the rest.

Got a compression tester? 'Loading up' might just mean gutless and worn out! But, a piston and ring(s) is cheap enough...pull the exhaust and check the cylinder and the exhaust side of the cylinder for scoring.

What is dirt cheap? Under $100 and I would just buy it - no questions!

Sounds like the choke flap is the starting problem.I had that problem with several Stihl saws including an 026 super which is similar. I would perceive it has a dirty air filter or the choke is stuck in between off and on is why it loads up. Could just need adjusted.I would put a new air filter on this saw with a new choke flap, start it and warm it up and adjust the carb properly.

I wouldn't think the saw is worn out, it looks almost new. I could still read the words on the sticker by the bar. He would not give me an exact price, but said it would be around 175.
