Checked for spark arrestors?

The last time I actually did any work on a FS cutting area, I believe I had all the screens in place, carried a extinguisher, pulaski, shovel, 5 gallons of water. And then we did "hoot owl" All saws shut off by 9 or 10 am.
But, I don't think anybody actually checked the saws... or the old farm tractor, or the pickup... or the old jeep that I was skidding with.
(open headers, no brakes, fan had gone thru radiator and had a radiator rigged to the front bumper, it looked a sight)
(odd fire V6 had a good tone in 4 low with logs behind it...)

It is all in accordance with what you have for a ranger, I have seen guys like that.
They can be a problem.

In a normal year I don't think they mess with you much, but this year hasn't been normal. Extremely hot and dry. We been socked in with smoke for months.

Much of the spark arrestor info just does not make sense but yet seems appropriate. A stock not modified vehicle may travel just about in any situation but some times no. I had and old four cylinder engine on a crawler with a quite stock muffler which was not acceptable. My dump truck and Bronco were a different animal. My Bronco had full on racing headers with glass packs. The FS spent several visits to examine every thing I had and did not even glance at the Bronco. My crawler was immediately red tagged until I had a specific approved spark arrestor. When the FS says that a vehicle should have some spark suppression when going off road. As has been mentioned this is so easy to build or fabricate an add on system that it is not worth making any debate. Performance does not matter because these conditions only apply when going off road. Thanks

The first part of my task on FS land (a few years ago) was the tractor had to be examined for "seeds". Then I was directed to install a spark arrestor on the thing... Which I did. A few weeks later, the entire muffler fell off the 1956 massey ferguson. I cobbled together something with some conduit, and kept going. nobody bothered me, nothing caught on fire.

If one of you guys want to bring a trailer, I will make you a FINE deal on one worn out tractor.
I will even fetch the skid steer to help load it. No, it won't "run" now.

When I looked up the laws, any vehicle staying on a forest service or logging road had to have a spark arrestor or a factory exhaust system. Any vehicle going off road had to have a spark arrestor, regardless. Might explain why your Bronco was overlooked, and your crawler got tagged.

The bronco at the time had a $50,000 full on race motor and yes it was a genuine factory Stroppe motor with all documents. At the time I could not care less about performance. So I pulled cam and lifters and put a very base cam in it. That Bronco only lived off road as it was my work horse pulling logs or a couple of trailers. I still am not to argue about regulations. I have joked about having a huge bon fire unattended. A couple of times thought I was going to be arrested until a guard and Ranger rescued me. The snow and the rain had soaked every thing so much that for most part starting a fire was not worth the effort but then there are regulations. At the time I explained a fire would not burn a moment past thirty minutes unattended. Thanks
