I'm trying to put some figures together for building a chip truck. Seems I can't get into one that's decent for under 12 g's and that's a bit much right now. There's a lot of cab and chassis/flatbed's/stake body's/etc. on the cheap right now but I'm not sure where to start when it comes to the box. I checked prices on having my welder fab one...way too much. Anyone know of dealer's of used chip boxes? Found one guy in Tennessee selling old asplundh units but they're off the forestry buckets and a bit small for me. I'm looking for at least 12 foot or so. I don't know the pricing on new arbortech's or southco's but I'm sure I'll #### when I see them. I got about 3 grand in the budget for just the box, am I SOL or is that reasonable?

there are three box's on ebay right now with hoist for $2,000.00 each first come first choice of box's

Yeah, a good ram is a big piece of the pie. A lot of small companies around here put homemade boxes on masonary beds and line the inside with some hard sheet steel. Exposed plywood gets eaten up pretty darned fast with the chip hitting it.

Sorry to post and run like that guys but something came up. I have my eye on a truck already with a stake body dump so the hoist is covered. Those boxes on ebay right now were the ones from Tennessee off a forestry bucket for 2 grand each, right? Little small. I like that box your buddy has there, SOM, let me know what the deal is on that if you get the chance. I got a few calls to make tomorrow to dealer's but they all seem to be advertising new or like new boxes and I just don't want to drop that kind of coin before winter. Any info on used box dealers would be awesome guys. Thanks.

Chuck n' duck is sold, boss, sorry. But I'd chill out with you guys if I get up that way fer sure. I'm gonna call that guy tomorrow. You know him?

not that I know of but I just saw the post on CL there is a chance I know him but there is 10000 tree Co.s around here so probably not.

If you are having problems find a large enough chip truck, at a price you can stand to look at. You might go to a used truck website and check out grain dump trucks. Mega capacity, dump allready installed... I almost bought one when I found the 8x16 stake bed dumper that I now own. Just remember, they belonged to farmers, not mechanics. Might be "Well Broken In".

That's true. They are heavy duty, but the gates need to be modified for dumping chips from what I remember. The ones I looked at have small slot for pouring grain instead of gates for dumping chips etc.

Do a search for online auctions. Some of these sites have huge inventories for this kind of equipment. Damn near anything you need and could wish for, really.

What you'll do is bid on it from your computer. When you win the thing, they will notify you that it's official. You can pick it up within so many days, or you can pay to have it trucked to your home town. I don't think the shipping fee is too steep from what I remember.

I've seen some good deals on there. I'm kind of eager to learn to do some arc welding, and fab one together myself. Besides my 1 ton C-30 with a 14x8x6 dump box that I have to modify by putting a tool box over the cab, cutting the back gates in half, and raising the box by 2-4 ft, I'd like to fab together a whole set up for myself. Maybe I could do a few for the ample outfits like yours wanting to expand for some extra curricular dough.

Plenty of used trucks around and plenty of metal. Time is the real questionable factor.

Most grain trucks have a small chute for dumping in to an auger for a small silo, but can also have the entire rear gate swung and latched open to dump at an elevator where they have the capacity. Stay away from side dumps, they will be far more trouble than you can imagine.

Grain Trucks work great, remove the back and do up a homemade tailgate, slap a tarp on and you are done.

I built a chip box onto a contractor dump bed this year on a 1 ton chevy, plywood with supports on the side and back. (easy to remove if I want to load it with a tractor) 4x4s in the front corners and 6 2x12s across the front.

It comes apart easy and anything can be replaced in minutes. I added a tarp and I was done. Works great.

What was I out? A couple hundred for supplies...maybe.

i currently cutting a 9' asplundh bed to fit onto my 1 ton 8' dump bed into the stake pockets to get rid of my mesh cage that i have on it now.

I got mine for $100.00 and the guy i got it from does have a 11' one also that is rusty.

if you look on the iowa craigs list, there is a guy south of me who has alot of the aslpundh trucks and chippers for sale and he does have parts trucks available.
