IMO all that the manufactures need to do for safety would be to add a foot pedal that controls the feed wheels. Similar to the pedal in some bucket lifts. If no foot is on the pedal the hydraulics wont work. Simple, cheap, effective.
Nobody is gonna wear rfid chips, metal gloves, etc. 100% of the time.

They could do this with the lever being pull to activate, on a spring so it has to have manual contact to engage. Sort of a deadman's switch.

Operators and owners would hate this, autofeed is for allowing the operator to walk back and grab another load. Nobody wants to have to have an operator actively engaging the feedwheel.
