It does make sense. With the whipper you'll probably pull back a bloody stump, but if those rollers catch ya, ya better think/react quick!

I've always thought a good way to teach/show/scare a new groundie how to respect/operate/rescue theirself from a chipper would be to tie a rope around their waist, and throw the other end into the rollers. Let em have 10 feet or so to work with. The trainer would be at the roller feed controls, and if the trainee failed to stop it, then the trainer would. And then they would have failed the test, but still be alive.

But, I'm a hardass. And I don't think OSHA would approve of my training methods.

Statistics are easily manipulated. I have no doubt that Chuck and Ducks cause more injuries per hours of operation than Discs. However the typical C&D injuries are scratches and minor bruises. If we talk about serious injuries and deaths then It would almost certainly be the large discs at the top.

Farmers Put Live Chickens in Wood Chippers
Mon Apr 14

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Two California poultry farmers who fed some 30,000 live chickens into wood chippers will not face criminal charges because they had permission from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (news - web sites), prosecutors said on Friday.

But a spokesman for the Humane Society of the United States called the farmers "callous and barbaric" and disagreed with the decision not to prosecute them.

The farmers needed to destroy the chickens because they were "spent" -- or no longer able to produce eggs -- and could not make chicken soup out of them because the farms were under quarantine for the poultry virus Exotic Newcastle Disease, District Attorney's spokeswoman Gayle Stewart said.

Stewart said the men, who run a poultry farm near San Diego, asked a senior veterinarian with the Agriculture Department if they could employ the wood chippers and were given permission.

"Once they had permission we decided that they did not have any criminal intent," Stewart said.

Brothers Arie and Will Wilgenburg, who run Escondido-based Ward Poultry Farm, could not be reached for comment on Friday. Earlier, they told the San Diego Union Tribune newspaper that they were doing "what we thought we had to do" based on expert advice and stopped as soon as they learned otherwise.

Wayne Pacelle, a spokesman for the Humane Society, said that explanation was unacceptable.

"The act of feeding live chickens into a wood chipper is an extraordinarily callous and barbaric act and I can't imagine any person with a whit of common sense would use a wood chipper as a killing tool," he said. "No person with any experience in killing animals would sanction the use of this technique."

Pacelle said the District Attorney's decision not to prosecute the brothers rested on the "faulty assumption" that using wood chippers to kill chickens was an accepted practice.

I wonder what would be the accepted practice of killing chickens. I grew up in the country and we killed chickens for dinner by slitting their throats. I would think the wood chipper, especially a C&D would be a lot faster and less painful for the chicken.

I teach new guys the pulling power of a self feeder by getting branch at least 10 ft. long and around 2 inch dia. started in the feedwheel and then stop it. I tell them hold on to the other end and see if you can stop it from going in. After they fail I tell them that would be your body if you ever let the chipper grab you.

As far as injuries, no doubt in my mind the self feeders are the ones that top the list for serious and fatal injuries. I've used C&Ds a few times and it was fun throwing branches in and watching how fast they disappeared. I learned you need to keep the pieces short and thorny stuff even shorter.

netree,
I don't understand what you mean by the above. Do you not agree with my statement that self-feeders top the list of fatal injuries?

netree,
I did not say C&D's (non self feeding drums), I said self feeders, chippers with hydraulic feed wheels to pull in material, are the leading cause of chipper deaths. Self feeders is a term I have seen and heard chipper manufacturers use to describe a machine that uses feed wheels.

AA, We need to have a probationary period for you. No stupid jokes until you demonstrate that you don't live under a bridge, carry a club and eat children for breakfast.

O you know Feed them water them and let them live until the disease gets them or they die a ripe old age......

I'd suggest a couple dozen low income individuals (don't want to slur anyone and get banned), 50 gallons of assorted alcohol, shotguns and 90,000 rounds of 7 1/2 shot .

Option b would be to get a state funded (remember it's califruity) elderly poultry farm and allow the chickens to live out their days in comfort and all perish of natural causes.

peta

if your wondering what the ethical way of killing animals is, visit the peta website (people for the ethical treatment of animals) and request a free copy of the video "meet your meat". i got it about a month ago and didn't eat meat for about a week. i'm not a complete woos, so i soon returned to being a carnivore. it will make you sick though, at least the kentucky fried chicken.

How many of you have a chipper with curbside feed? I'm thinking this might be a nice option I believe it would be safer anyhow. :blob2:
