I have been getting request lately for advice on Cicada protection. I haven't found information available on this. What are your thoughts on this.
Are they damaging enough to arouse concern?

Other than installing netting how can you protect trees?

Post responsible kids with BB guns and pay a bounty.:D Really , the damage is unsightly but generally not significant.(They can really spoil a new planting but once a tree has a little age and size they have no notable health impact)

Xander-
No need to protect established trees, the damage is more unsightly than traumatic to the tree. Young plantings can be protected with cheesecloth draped over the tree and secured at the bottom. More unsightly than a few broken twigs if you ask me... 5 billion of them coming out in May - should make for an interesting spring.

I made a trip to Ohio a few summers back... maybe 99?

This retreat center had just done some major tree planting project... dozens for 6-8' trees... all eaten up... not a green leaf on them...
