Hi Guys
Was looking up how to fix my chainsaw on Google and stumbled onto this place.

I have a Stihl 009 (white case). I don't know how old it is but remember it coming onto the scene when I was in my early 20's (I am 46).

It has never had any maintenance done on it too my knowledge except a couple of blade replacements.

Recently it started playing up.....it ran fast for a minute then stopped and over again. Wouldn't start unless rested for a few minutes in between.

Anyway I live in Sydney, I rang a local parts supplier and they wanted $34 for a carby kit (gaskets only).Got onto ebay and got one from the U.S. for about $10 posted - this kit had the needle as well which the local one didn't. Anyway reused the old carby base gasket which was well worn and surprise surprise she didn't start. No surprise really - everything I fix has too be done 2 or 3 times to get it right...everything from house gutters too fixing the car I just do it over and again until I get it right......sometimes I get the odd victory and get it right the first time but thats not often - I hope you get the idea - not much skill but I keep at it.

Anyway, after youtubing and googling I have decided to get a few parts like the two fuel lines, any filters and perishables and have a go at fixing this saw......when she runs she is a pleasure too use.

I could just buy a cheap new saw from ebay for under $200 now - but I want to fix this one up and get it going as a kind of challenge. Finding reasonably priced parts in Sydney is a problem though. As an example I went to Bunnings to buy a chain , $44 for a 12", got onto ebay and got one $14 posted from Melbourne - prices here in Sydney for just about any part seem ridiculous when compared to the USA.

Can anyone suggest a good parts supplier to ship to Sydney - the one I found has a really limited supply.....also how does one go about doing a basic service like this....is anyone aware of a youtube link for the 009?

Most importanly , can anyone suggest a list of parts I should get before having another go at this girl.

Thanks
Paul

If your saw dies after getting hot..but then restarts after cooling down...

This suggests a bad coil..especially if it dies again when getting hot again.

Unfortunately..I know of no way to check this problem..on the cheap

Other than finding a cheap good coil..I wouldn't throw any more $$ into this saw..!!

They're only worth about $100 in running condition.

Do you have a manual? This is probably for a later model that yours, but may be applicable:

http://m.stihlusa.com/WebContent/CMSFileLibrary/instructionmanuals/009_Manual.pdf

It's not a maintenance manual, but has basic information and settings that you should be aware of.

Make sure your fuel/oil ratio is correct. You may have air in the fuel line. Check the fuel pick-up in the tank to
make sure it's not clogged or deteriorated. Make sure you have the correct spark plug and that it is correctly
gapped. Make sure the carburetor is adjusted correctly.

Good luck. Let us know how it's going.

Hi Mac

Yeah that's my manual, thanks. Will do as you advise when I put it back together again (yep I pulled it apart again) I have narrowed it down now to two possible faults

1. the breather line broke long ago and now the ends may have blocked up with crud and sealing up and pressurising the fuel tank therefore not allowing the Petrol to be pumped out under the relatively low pressure of the Carby pump - should have checked this before rebuilding the Carby
or

2. the carburettor to manifold gasket was badly deteriorated but I reused it. If this is not sealing the pulser hole wont get the carburator pumping petrol - I may be wrong on this one but it needs a gasket anyway.

If you think I know what I am talking about,,,well I don't....I narrowed this done from searching possible faults on Google. I have no idea about all this but will fix this beast if for no other reason than the challenge.

BTW as an aside my brother just bought a new Husky (I think he paid about $300) and I don't think its half the saw my old Stihl is - then again his works and mine doesn't. The old Stihl seems more solid and I am getting to know it fairly well now. Also I can't believe how easily parts are available in the USA...I just messaged an ebay seller (something (red?) Barn Parts - not sure) about a few parts , can't believe the price for parts in the US - you US based guys are lucky.

A broken down Stihl 009 is on ebay now in OZ at $71 so far........ so I know what mine is worth, but that's not the point of this exercise.

Thanks Mac

Like others have said I would try a coil for the hot run issue, I have a 009 and it has done more then I would expect a small saw to do, It has been though a flood and sat full of mud and stuff for months, Cleaned it up and fired right up no rebuild needed( that was years ago ) after the flood ran it for a few years then it sat full of fuel for a few years untouched. Three pulls and it was running again once again no problems. So others are going to tell you to toss it, I would not I would fix it and use it, it'll do more then what the size suggests.

Paul, you can get a service manual and parts list by asking in the Beg For Manuals thread in the Stickies at the top of the main chainsaw forum page.

Plus one for not putting too much $$ into a 009. They're good little saws, but very quickly you can spend more on parts than the saw is worth, don't ask how much I put into my 011 before I knew better.
