How many of you have climbed enough to know what it is like
to get down in two seconds. I have been attacked by hornet's
on several occasions it sucks. I also once was in a tree lucky
it was early fall and was piecing down a large hollow tree got
half way down and found a huge honey bee hive millions of bees
was grateful it was fall they moved a little but did not fly until
noon we decided to leave trunk standing as it would not hit any
thing and we got some honey.

A full Bee Suit is yet another piece of equipment necessary to a veteran arborist who doesn't want to be stopped in his tracks when he encounters this problem, and he always does eventually. They are hellishly hot to work in, but it's considerably better than the alternative, I know from hard earned first hand experience!

Buy one and go where others fear to tread.

Of course the most responsible and environmentally friendly thing to do is call a professional bee keeper to harvest the queen and move the whole colony intact, it takes time, but it's the smart professional move.

Hornets and such I terminate with prejudice!

I've been stung quite a few times in trees, but the worst was in a huge dying sugar maple I was taking down prob 6 yrs ago,all was fine going up and til I started cutting and the limbs were aswingin' and then ouch ouch ouch wtf? there was a nice hollow full of hundreds of bumblebees about 50 ft up,had to come down past the nest getting stung the whole way it was hot I was pissed:angry: but I went back up too and after about a cple dozen more stings I think I heard the bees scream RAIIIIIIIID!!!

Yes honey bees are having a bad enough time around here I'll give them a break, but wasps and bumblebees no

Most of the time honey bees are very docile and easy to work around but down in Jomoco's area I have run across several Africanized honey bees. They are a different story. They will come to you and start a fight. Once they get started they are very persistant.
Early in the morning a good shot of gas will win the war.

I was trimming from a skidder bucket and working from the top down, same side of the wire as the rig(not reaching over wires). I inadvertently dropped my bucket onto the nest of some spirited Bald Faced Hornets. I felt something on the top of my head, and thought "what the; I have a hard hat on". Then I saw something fly by my face. You never realize how slowly an aerial lift descends until you are being chased by some pissed off hornets! I got over 20 stings on my head alone, and went to the ER just in case I was allergic. sat outside, no reaction(just a bad headache) so I call the boss. He says "your going back to work right?" I said "nope. I can't even wear my hard hat!" Never encountered one climbing, but I will be lookin' out for them:chainsaw:

Thats one reason im always tied in twice. everytime, every tree. Being tied in provides a quick escape in an emergency.

small sprays

Those bald hornets are murder.does anyone sell any small cans of spray you could keep with you. I know they have pepper spray how about hornet spray.

Better than nothing

If you find yourself being attacked, remember to point your chainsaw exhaust at them and rev the heck out of it as you're escaping, they breathe through their abdomens, and carbon monoxide can drop them out of the air temporarily. Be very careful that you don't cut your body line in the process.
This has worked for me many times.

Raid Wasp, Hornet Killer works wonders. Bit a of a pain to carry but if you attach a water bottle holster to your harness you always have it. It sprays in a wide shotgun blast in front of you, for about20 - 22 feet, with the center being the most effective knock down zone.

I dont normally carry it. Its in the truck.....but if i can see active flying stingbots, i'll put it on the harness with the cap off, nozzle ready. Has saved my ass once from wasps, while cutting up near a house gutter. 5 quick blasts to clear the area, they dropped like rocks. I found the nest entrance in the eaves and blasted it inside. Still had half a canister for stragglers.

cheap insurance (8 bucks) , and oyu dont notice the weight at all.
