I want to get some climbing gear so I can climb and tie limbs off while I am taking down trees. I don't know much about it. Can you guys tell me what equipment I need? Keep in mind I am not going to be doing this much. I assume I need a harness, rope, spikes, and the rope to go around the tree. What kinds should I look for? Just give me a rundown please.

Id look in your local phone book and hire a professional. If you dont want to do that. Go to tree stuff. Com. See what you want, ask use about particular gear. Get a lot of practice just climbing in some short spready trees.

Don't take this as being rude. But being safe.

We dont know anything about you. Have you climbed before? What is your body type? Srt or drt.? Do you have a friend that can teach you?

Don't watch YouTube and think you can go out and just start climbing. It takes years to get good at this trade. .

Again dont take this as being rude. I dont want to read about you in next months tcia magazine.

Be safe and be afraid. Fear keeps you alive and on your toes. It keeps you focused at the task at hand.

all you really need is a big ladder, and a pole saw to reach those limbs you can get to from the top of the ladder. If you stand on top of the ladder with the pole saw you can reach real high.

If you want my take get yourself a nice electric sawzall, chainsaws are overrated.

Thanks internet ninjas. I have climbed with a buddy using his gear, now I want to get some of my own. But if a sawzall is all I need I will get the batteries charged up. Now if anybody has some real advice I would be more than happy to listen.

Cheap. I cut frequently and I very familiar with trees but don't need high dollar equipment because it won't get used much, I want basic stuff. I have a buddy that climbs and I want to get some of my own stuff. When I say climb.....I want to be able to get up the tree, tie off a limb and drop it safely. I do this now...just not the correct way. Usually involves horsepower and a few ropes and it is more difficult than actually climbing the tree and doing it the correct way. I know the basics of what I need I just want to know some more details. Like how long of a rope, is 100 sufficient? What kind of harness? What kind of spikes? Should i look for used equipment?

Do not buy used equipment. Its your life. Buy new. The basic climbing kits the vendors sell should get you what you need. Since you have already admitted you don't know much about our trade, I would suggest you stick with your buddy. A little knowledge can be very dangerous.

I plan to stick with him for learning it. I will look into the basic kits they sell. Thanks for the info.

you laugh, I have seen this! extension cord and all, home owner didnt want to pay a professional so he just climbed up in the tree and started taking branches out hahaha
I seen this happen also. We were doing a job near a pizza joint in mt etna pa. Owner of pizza joint asked us for a price. He scoffed at us and took off. Then we see him return with a 40 or 50 foot extension ladder, sawall, and a whole lot of extension cord.

I was amazed at his fearlessness and stupidity .

Op. Perhaps the Buckingham or Weaver leather back saddle will suite you. The one with independent leg straps and a floating D ring.
As far as length of rope. Idk. What are you climbing. ? Imo you can't go wrong with 150 ft. I also live in pa. Most of the time i dont need more than than. If i do i tie two line's together.
