i am a 20 year old tree climber in toms river nj . no matter what i cant seem to get caluses on my fingers . i just get really bad blisters . if it is practical , are there any good gloves on the market that can be used for climbing?

blister

Got to laugh, Blister is the nickname for one of the guys that always shows up after the work is done and he's a pain always complaining how he hurts, it hasn't dawned on him yet why everyone calls him Blister, he thinks he is fast (blistering speed)NOT!. Gloves help but you got to find out which ones work for you. Ask, do you want to be able to feel what you touch? Thin(goatskin) or synthetic with velcro to keep them on, no long cuffs. Are you going to use them to do other things than climb, like drag brush? It takes a heavier glove. Like any of your tools they are designed to do different jobs, are you going to buy different gloves for different jobs? I like Stanley synthetic but could do without the wear pads. The thin supple leather ones work fine until you sweat in them and they dry out you need to wet them to put them on next morning, they shrink like crazy but you can feel what you touch. Dollar a pair cotton with smurf dots work too. First decide what you use them for then buy different ones till you find the ones you like and hope you can find them again when you need to buy more. Moto cross gloves work but they ain't cheap. A warning, do not use long cuff gloves if you feed the chipper, they snag on a limb and you can get pulled into the chipper.

My favorite gloves(for climbing) are like those 'ugly gloves' Sherrill sells, but mine are called 'wonder gloves', and are a lot cheaper. I paid around $140 for a gross. I cut the thumb and index finger out, and after a days use(or less) I throw them in the wash. You can also toughen the skin of your hands using various techniques used in martial arts, specifically the 'Iron Fist' style. You don't have to go all out, and do some of the extreme methods they employ, but it will give you an idea of what to do. When I was younger, I hated gloves. I toughened the palms of my hands considerably using a grapefruit-sized chunk of lava rock. When I was kicking back in the evening, instead of smoking, I would slap and squeeze it. The calluss develops slowly, and the more you do it, the more they develop. This works good, but nowadays I just wear my gloves-they keeps mah hands pretty!

great . thanks guys . i do have a pair of moto x gloves but they seem a alittle heavy . i think i am gonna try a pair of mechanix , the gloves they have at pepboys . thanks again guys

I find that the gloves with fully caoted palms will ger real sweaty. Also after a few uses they get caught up in my MT and jam things up.

I like the cheap yellow ones with the clear crosshatch coating, they breath better and don't shread. I've seen them for less then a buck a pair. And if you wear one side out they just flip over to the other hand, keepa bag full and never have to match L&R gloves.

QC seems pretty loose, so sometimes XL dont fit and L will. With my big hooks I usually need XXL or better.

I use the Mechanix gloves. They breathe and fit great. You can feel everything. The only down fall is they are expensive: about $20 a pair normally. I buy by the box at NAPA and get them for $16 per.

I'm an 'Atlas Grip' lover, the blue ones for big stuff, lots of up and down ot the lighter white ones for light work (just discovered them), I keep assorted levels of wear so they work for different jobs, with most of the coating worn off they work for ground rope work, dragging brush etc., new ones for climbing till they break down. Almost the whole crew is hooked now, there's got to be 15-20 pairs floating around!

They cheap if you buy in bulk, a little price to buy singles ($6-7 CAD) if you go though a lot, a pair will last me maybe 10 big jobs in the tree at most.

JPS is right though about the sweat factor, I have to take em off once in a while while climbing to let my hands dry out, but my hands have never been in better shape, I find I have far better deterity and control then when I used to climb without and had big ugly calus growth at the base of my fingers!

We use the wonder gloves also. Yes they do get hot in the summer and they need to be removed at times. But the cost is good, the wear is good, and the grip excellent.

We have tried mechanix gloves and found them to be alright but too expensive. After a few days of handling wood they seem not to wear so well....note on the package ....not be be used with abrasive surfaces or something like that.

for those of us with girlfriends...

....or boyfriends, I guess- the smurf gloves keep your hands clean and soft!

love

hey guys i went to pep boys and looked at some gloves . i ended up getting Ford pit crew gloves. not too much grip , i need to wrap my hand with the rope but over all i cant complain .

"i need to wrap my hand with the rope but over all i cant complain ."

your joking right????????

the only thing you wrap with a rope is something your prepared to loose.

This question of calluses and girlfriends makes me wonder who your girlfriend and her 5 friends are. :p

I am a footlockin' freak and don't do gloves so I have calluses - don't wear gloves when I lift either - calluses. If they are too rough, file them with an emory board, smooth as can be.

When it is too cold, I use the atlas or the stanley ones from home depot.

i had a good buildup going for a while but for some reason they started turning to blisters and my hands would be bleeding while i was climbing

This talk about calluses ripping reminds me of high school gymnastics. I would come home, eat warmed up left overs and then do dishes with my Mom to cool off my hands and soften them. It was nice to have that time with Mom. After banging my hnads on the pommels trying to get the hang of high legs and floating scissors, I was plenty uncomfortable. It wasn't very cool to tape or wear wicks on side horse.

Now, I wear Smurf gloves exclusively. I don't like rough, torn hands any more than my Sweetie does.

Gloves

I find it tough to climb in any type of gloves but if the time come where I need some I usually use Ironclad Gloves. Their Heavy Utility gloves are thin so you can feel what your doing and durable. They'll run you something around $30 a pair.
