i've been looking at climbing helmets
and have narrowed it down between the
petzel roc and the kong magic helmet.
any suggestions????? (stupid question:D )
thanks,
budroe:cool:

Never tried the kong, but I really like my Roc. I went from a Stihl helmet system (HHat and muffs) to the roc. The weight and coolness change between the two were huge. The helmet just feels good on your head.

I vote for the Roc. It doesn't ever fall off, get snagged on anything, has no brim so I can look up easy, lasts a long time, and is comfortable. The bad thing is it's costly to install ear muffs. I like mine mostly because I don't even know I'm wearing it, and I figure it's so good it couldn't be improved on, but that's the kind of thinking that'll slow your growth you in this industry, so... how about those kevlar hats?

how about those kevlar hats?

well worth the $75 Don Blair is charging for them, very comfortable. They have bracket for muffs, but are smaller then the US industry standard. You have to shave/file the tabs on your Peltor muffs.

I've emailed the importer of the Kiwi helmet to see if they carry muffs that fit.

Tom,
I've asked a lot of people locally about climbing helmets and I've heard one consistent comment repeated in different places. Several have said that the composite helmets may offer a better protection rating in case of a major impact, but the plastic helmets hold up better to day-in day-out knicks and bumps. Most around here seem to think the plastic helmets (like the Roc) offer better value for working environments and real-world use(getting tossed in the toolbox daily, groundies dropping a saw on it or tripping over it, small limbs bouncing off it, etc.).

I've already taken a few good whacks with my PH, and there is no visible damage. One was while flipping my lanyard out, had that happen with a Peltor and the clip left a knick.

I think is far superior to the Roc in comfort, which puts it worlds ahead of the generic plastic stuff.

The only thing I don't like is the brim. Tom sais it does not bother him, but it gets in my way a little. I can live with it though.

I just brought one back from TCI, and I like the brim. Was missing it with the Roc, when looking up toward the sun. Plus, the rim gives a little bit of safety margin over the roc in the event of saw kickback toward the face. (But I think the face shield should be manditory on removals).

Rocky,

Choose what you want. Did you follow the link to the comparison chart from Blue Water? Compare the items and let me know what you think.

What kind of expertise to the people you talked with have? Personal opinion? Facts?

If you treat your helmet the way you describe, it doesn't seem like you care much about your personal protection. Would you let people walk on your rope? If you toss your helmet on the ground its even a better reason to have a better helmet.

Why do you think Kevlar is used in bullet proof vests and not plastic?

My head is worth twenty dollars. That's all the Kevlar helmet costs since you are already planning on spending fifty bucks. Dig deep and get better protection...or not, your choice.

Go with the Petzl Roc. There is a reason we no longer carry the Kong Magic helmets.

And the reason is????????
I have two of them:eek:

i think this is the model, my fire-engine red one looks better. Did not come with muffs.

I could post a pic if you want.

This one is for chipping deadwood

One thing that I have not seen any of you mention is that plastic helmets should be replaced every three years. Because of sun damage the pastic will not stay intact and become brittle. The kevlar helmets have like a 10 or 15 year life span, plus they have a better protection rating.

?????????????????????????
This was in response to the no longer caryying the Magic helmets? Don't want to say on a public forum? My email works Thanks

Sorry, I didn't mean to just blow off your question like that. I am not at liberty to discuss our decision with regards to the Kong Magic helmet, other than part of it was due to customer responses.

Thats the one I'm wearing, call Don Blair's people at Serr Morreno, they have the dielectric model on hand.

The one I got has metal screws in it, also Don is selling for $15 less then Fresco.

Sierra Moreno Merchantile Co. $75 for the dielectric Orders Only 1-800-262-0800 is what i got off Doug Melnors website.
