A question came up in another Chainsaw forum which applies to many sorts of woodworking machinery:

Do you know of anyone who can resurface clutch shoes ? When I say, "resurface", I mean to completely remove, then replace the layer of pad material, reusing the metal portion .
It will be cheaper to do this to my Stihl 090, than to buy new.

I usally try and save a few bucks here for some of my saws also. I will soak the entire assembly then clean it as best as I can. As far as resurfacing I use a wire brush on a dremel to clean it up and finish off with some fine sandpaper with water. Relube and try it out. If it works run it.

090 clutch

Don't know of anybody who could bond the material on. If you could find someone, I would think the clutch shoes would still be cheaper. For people who have never seen them, Stihl clutch shoes used to have a lining bonded on, much like a brake shoe. I have seen these run on 031,041,045 with the lining removed with no ill effects or difference in clutch operation.

Thanks, Stihltech

I hear that 090 shoes can run $33ea. times six !

I already know of a shop in Canada and one in New Zealand that can do the job, but, gee, surely there is some good ole' 'Merican knowhow just a bit closer to home (Georgia, USA).;)

Years back I found an automotive brake / clutch relining shop that glued new linings on a set of small trailer brake shoes for me. You might have some luck searching the phone book or Internet for relining options.
