I have been watching ebay and buying up some NOS parts to rebuild my old mini mac 35 to new operating conditiion. problem is I keep seeing bargin priced saws and placing a bid on them too. Thats how I ended up with the Poulan, 50.00 brand new, have the bid on one of the new Mccullochs right now at $2x dollars too. My boys enjoy sawing and they can use up the cheap saws I am sure. I see some of you collectors have a dozen saws. Can I aquire too many saws? What if I start borrowing money to buy saws, should I seek help?

LOL, the boys and I are having fun with our new found hobby. Ma thinks we are nuts.

Collecting Saws

No Problem!--Just habit forming--I have about 80 McCulloch saws now--about 65 running & the rest for parts--I'm never able to pass up a good deal on an older saw. You'll never know when you might need parts!---That's what I tell my wife!---Storage is a real problem, I'll post some pics early next week.---Tony--when do they have shows/demonstrations--Lumberjack type events in Western NC?--I would like to go to one but I never find out until it's too late?

The biggest problem is getting money to this very excellent hobby.
My goal used to be 100 saws. Now it is to try and hold it under 200.
But it is fun!!!!!

I think it is cool Butch. I accidentally got into the saws also. I cut wood for the elderly in my community and I started looking on Ebay to cut my overhead on chains, bars, etc. Since then I have bought out a Stihl dealership and I buy as many saws that I possibly can. I do turn alot of the saws over. My wife has gotten to the point of calling me Sanford. :D . I think your situation is pretty cool myself. :)

Like I said,a zillion,maybe 2.Keep it up,you always have interesting things. :)

The only dangerous amount of saws is none. My collection numbers arond 9 right now, probably more when I have some extra cash and look on ebay again.

Anyone that says collecting saws is a waste of time is an idiot, and should try it for himself first.

Collecting chainsaws is not a problem, until you start running out of storage space to keep them. :) I have around 25 saws all over the garage, 15 run great, 5 - 6 might run if I ever get around to fixing them, and then I have a few saws in boxes that will probably never run, but you never know so I better keep them around anyway. :p

I think you would have problem if you started going directly to the saw shop, after cashing your pay check and blowing the whole wad on a saw or two, before going home.

Your really in trouble if you borrow money from the the local loanshark to get money to buy those " gotta have that saw " syndrome. Then I would say it is time to check into the local CSAA chapter for counseling and therapy from other reformed chain saw addicts.

Until that time comes, Naw , you don't have a problem, your just normal like the rest of us chain saw nuts. :blob2:

Nope, you don't have a problem, none at all...

And don't let anyone tell you that you need a 12 step chainsaw program either.

Besides, if it is obsolete, it doesn't count.

You don't have a problem. Everybody needs at least 3 saws for different size tasks, plus one or two parts saws for each category, plus a duplicate set in a different brand so nobody can say you are biased, plus the saws people give you in exchange for work done, plus the ones you think just "look neat", plus the "orphan" saws nobody can get parts for but you have the skills to make, plus the ones too cheap to turn down, plus a hot saw, etc, etc,............ um, no We don't have any problems.

I have 2 015's, an 009. an 017, a WildThing (don't ask), a Jonsered 49SP, a Dolmar 112 (silver, never been run), a Dolmar 119, a Makita 520i, a homelite super EZ-Auto, an xl-12, a MS-361, an 064 , a DOlmar 7900 and a Tensen Mini-brute (12v electric) that all run.
I have 2 old Macs, an as yet un-identified antique with a Power Products engine, a Wright reciprocating saw, an Orline Mustang, a David Bradley, that don't run ........yet.
I have enough parts to assemble a brand new 015, parts to put a few 009's together, and keep the fleet running for the forseeable future.
I have given away a few running saws, sold a bunch and given away a pile of parts saws.

I live on 1/3 of an acre and have a fireplace, no woodstove..............yet.

I don't see a problem with this.

Dang, I am fairly normal afterall

Saws that count:
Stihl 066, Homie Super XL, Homie 150

Saws that I don't count:
Sears/Poulan w/10" bar that I paid $5 for to take out a stump, but never threw away. Works okay, but takes longer to start than I've ever spent cutting with it. Besides, it's small and doesn't take up much space.

Monkey Wards moderately big mamma from late 50s that uses 7/16ths chain. Runs like a big dog, but has nothing to cut with.

So, most people would say 5, but, I'll only really recognize 3, and then only really use 2, but then kick myself for the only day that I didn't take the 150 for back-up and needed it.

Although I was eyeballing a really nice 036....

There is a section in my web page "Events" All anyone needs to do is let me know when a chain saw related event is going to be held and I can list for everyone to see.
The key ingredient here is people have to let me know.

So is it still normal if you have a great saw(385XP) a wonderful saw,IMHO,(Poulan3300) a pain in the ##S saw(Poulanmicroxxvdeluxe) another royal pain in the $#s saw (craftsman 2.3 all metal top handle) and a diamond in the ruff saw(craftsman 2.3 top handle) a saw with potential but no air filter cover dumpster diver rescue (early 70's craftsman 3.7) and are eyeballin another saw for parts if needed even though you may not need it? Now I find myself looking for saws on ebay and local trading post at least 4-5times per week. If I could just get that special super duper saw I'd be finished. Guess I'll keep havin to get crappy ones til I do.
Now I know I have some other issues here due to the craftsman saws and the micro xxv but it was free as well as the 3.7, the royal pain in the tale was ebayed for my dad as a parts saw for his but I couldn't give it up b/c condition and I think it just needs crank seals.

By the way is that a straightforward job, replacing crank seals? I think it must have an air leak b/c it just doesn't want to pull fuel into carb. I've replaced fuel line, fuel filter, soaked, sprayed, rebuilt walbro carb with diaphram kit. Great spark, compression about 80lbs on my tester. It runs spraying fuel directly into carb, so I believe its a fuel issue. The carb will run another saw quite well.
