What's the best brand and model of compression tester to get? I tend to like the best bang for the buck over most expensive and I can't seem to find much information other than Amazon reviews.

I got mine at Advance Auto for a reasonable price, I don't see a brand name on it. Make sure you get one with a check valve

I bought mine at Oreilly's. It works, check valve is on the end that screws into the plug hole.

I have a couple, a cheap one I bought at Meijer and a Snap On I found at a pawn shop for $36. I think Bailey's had one recently for under $20.

I have two. One is a Mack tools and the other is a Snap on. Both read within 2 psi of one another. The Mack was cheaper but works just as good.

This is the Mack

Lisle Tool makes a nice one that has the check/release valve near the gauge. It is reasonably priced. Less than 30 bucks is what I got mine for. Comes with an adapter for 2 different size plug threads.

I Have a Craftsman Set i bought at Sears...Comes with a hard case and attachments for about anything.... I think i paid about $60 for it..Pretty nice set..

I read somewhere that the OTC from Amazon is the same as the Snap On.

I never heard that but I can see it. I own plenty of Snap-On tools and the quality of the OTC is right on par with them. I am glad not to be turning wrenches for a living anymore. I spent each weeks paycheck on the Snap-On truck, sometimes several months. While they do make quality tools they are out of line on their pricing. It is so easy to get credit with them though....

I went through several before finally buying a SnapOn. That included the one from AutoZone, Lisle, and Baileys.

YEPPP.

I owned one from Autozone and and Lisle from O'Reilly's. The AZ lasted about 9 months and the Lisle lasted a couple of months. I wasted about half of what my SnapOn cost new. I bought mine used from Ebay for about half the new price.

I've had the OTC kit from Amazon for a couple months now and everything seems to be ok. I think it was around $55. It did include a little package of extra parts like valves and O-rings which is nice.

I got a Mityvac tester to replace my KD tool tester without the Valve in the end.The Mityvac was made in China but seems to be pretty accurate

A couple of questions, sorry to hijack. Why must you have a check valve near gauge? What is the proper method for doing the test. Like do you have to have choke on or of, and throttle engaged or not, etc?

Valve needs to be in the end that screws into the Plug Hole.Screw in and Pull until the needle quits climbing.Doesn't matter if the throttle is wide open.
