When I was very young, about 1,500 years ago I had poison ivy bad that went internal. Had to lay motionless for a week and a doc came and gave me a shot every day. Da, well, I have never had any reactions to PI since then untill now.

Since I didn't worry about the stuff I had climbed in a bunch of stuff this winter that had 'BIG' vines. And had a pair of ugly gloves used last summer to yank out PI.

It seems that now I'm a PI mess, it's all over my legs etc. Bla, bla, itch, itc.

I washed the gloves in a mild detergent as I would use for the line and they still are not clear of the PI oil. I can throw the gloves out and I'm not going to through the line out.

Anybody got an Idea?

at one with your line

Thanks everyone for the ideas and links.

Think I'll get in the wash bag with the rope. Gez, I hate PI.

Oral Ivy

.... hmmmm, well, that is where it all started. You see having had it internal means there is something always there so that is how I have never gotten it again. Recently my sig. other gave me some Rustox(?) a type of oral. It is a small dose digested, and works for most people.

With in an hour of telling her that I never get PI and taking it anyway I broke out all over.

Since then I am sensitive to the darn stuff.

JK :(

Since I'm one of the youngest here, I'll say it....

You couold wait it out too...
The oil on the rope is bound to degrade with time...

It can take up to 2 years, but 1 is more likely.

I would say wash it with a soap that is made for removing the ivy oil, I cant remember the name of a brand tho.:( In some cases regular detergent doesnt do the job, but I would be that if you washed it twice with reg detergent then it will be fine.

This idea of taking poison ivy contaminated ropes to a public laundry mat needs to be thought out. That is unless you have no consideration for others using the equipment after you, perhaps a senior or mother washing baby clothes.

Whenever i get into the PI, i start taking benedryl pills (or knock offs). one tab during the day to stay awake and 2 at bedtime to keep me asleep. the antihistamine keeps back the itching.

although ive never tried it, a friend told me to pour straight bleach over the blisters. the bleach dries out the skin and blisters. I prefer the benedryl.

As for the rope, id have to agree w/ washing it. afterwards, run an empty load of hotwater, soap and bleach through it. that should knock out any residue (or at least id hope it would).

I'm fairly sure you can still buy fels-naphta detergent in some grocery stores. It comes in large bars and also in flakes in a box. If you can only find the bars, shave it with a sharp knife. As far as the wahing machinegoes, have no fear, there will be no residual PI if you run a full machine of hot water and fels-naphta soap

Instead of throwing down $$ on a mesh bag, put on some rubber gloves and daisy chain the whole thing. That is what I've done in the past and it worked fine.
