If you daisy chain or stuff in a mesh bag, it's like washing your socks when they are all balled up. The rope needs to move around, flex back and forth, to come clean.
Yeah, it'll take 3 or 4 minutes to unravel the mess, but the reward for your hard work will be a cleaner rope.
Use cool water, mild soap, set dryer on no heat or hang dry. It seems like a no heat setting on the dryer would be better than hanging it because it would bounce some more of the particulate contaminants out.

One time I did put a rope in the dryer. When I came upstairs my cats were going crazy because of the clanging and banging. It was comical in a way :) I couldn't handle the noise either after about 45 seconds.

Actually, I'm not that concerned about UV degrade. Our ropes are out in the sun all the time. But...anytime the exposure can be limited it can't hurt.

For relief of the itching, use the hottest tap water you can stand. It'll itch like crazy for about 5 seconds, then give you a couple hours of relief.
The benadryl works a little bit too.

WAIT!!! A rep from Tec-Labs (they make Technu Oak N Ivy Cleanser) gave us a seminar a while back, and I remember him saying not to use hot water on your skin, because it opens up your pores, allowing the poising ivy to get deep down in there, or something to that effect.

That is when washing the oil off. With any chemical contamination cold soapy water is the best thing to wash with.

when dealling with a rash, hot water has been shown to give releaf and aid healing by opening up the capillaries.

just throw that rope in the wash wiht some Tekno. That stuff is great for getting sap out and for washing up PI.

Oh yeah the oral sounds good, take your mind off the itching

When I say hot tap water, I mean after the oil is gone and the rash is itching like mad.
When i get PI, I get a rash that really itches, then after about two days the the rash turns into a mass of blisters that rupture and weep puss non-stop. This really itches too. then about three days later the weeping stops and it starts to heal, but still itches.
When I can't sleep because of the itching, I get up and take a shower with nothing but the hot water on, my water heater is set at 120 degrees. It turns my skin red it's so hot, but it relieves the itching for a couple hours.

They say it's oil and you have to use this and that to get it off, but I'm certain that if you can get to water soon after contacting it and just rinse, that will get the oil off. Soap is great, but if all you have is water, it works.

About the oral, when I get a bad case I almost always get some on my pee-pee and my lips. They say it's becuse the poison goes systemic and affects sensitve areas. ANd no, I'm not that flexable.

Thats got to be worse than jock itch. I am one of the lucky ones who don't get it really. I might get a little bump like a mosquito bite and it itches a little but never had blister or large rash. If I had you wouldn't know it to look at it. I'd rather get PI than be allergic to almost every tree I climb especially oak and beech trees. Mostly effects me in the warmer hot weather.

Anyone have problems with just ivy that grows on the ground and up the tree. Seems like the dust or pollen that collects in there is hard on the allergies.

update

Thanks to everyone who contributed!
Amost 2 weeks with PI on top of psorises(sp). On my back, not a joint could bend, yuk! :(

The hot water to relieve itching was, let's say a mystical experience, I saw Elvis, and he wanted to negotiate for playing in the trees. Said he had an idea for a new outfit and some great moves for limb walking. No kidding. :D

This morning Sherrill informed me that I could wash all line and even the Glide saddle using Technu. I used it with Deft for both the pre and the wash. Yes, I did an extra rinse to protect the next users of the machine in case there would be any stray PI oil. And no, I did not wash the saddle in the machine.

Thanks again,
Jack of,

i TRY TO LIIVE ANDLEARN! i'VE BID TREES WITH POISON oak and ivy for the same money. Bad mistake on my part, and I am not even terribly affected by it. Inner arm and soft spots which generally only take a few days to leave. I'm completely sold on the fels naphta soap. It seems mild enough for my body and the contaminated equpment. Didn't mean to shout up there but the cap lock was stuck or something. Good luck in future.
