Hey All, The question is this. My client has a Cottonwood about 70' tall with three main leads. One of those leads has about a 30 degree angle over the neighbors 60' Silver Maple. He wants my client (me) to take the lead down over his property without hurting the Maple. The job is doable with a crane, however the tree is not a hazard and I told the client and the neighbor that. Am I wrong in thinking that the tree is the neighbors responsibility? Thanks Pete

The cottonwood limb, in suppressing the maple, may be reducing the need to prune the maple.

And yes your client should not feel forced; the neighbor controls everything that is in his air space, within reason.

I have a similar situation, compounded by the customers being only weekend cabin dwellers. I finally passed on the whole job, unless I could meet with both property owners in person, and find out who wants what, and who will pay. Usually when across property lines I will either decline, or make sure I can meet with both neighbors at once.

That is a great policy--arborists are often useful as mediators. Just don't get caught in any crossfire. If not together then as long as I talk to both that is good enough.

Where did the Dylan quote in your sig come from?

Treeco..
Never would expect you to be a Dylan fan....Nor did I think anyone even remembered Street Legal...as it was never a really popular album.

I've always liked the maybe more obscure...but I thought humorous... lines in that album.

Such as: the magician is quicker and his game is much thicker than blood and blacker than ink.

I cannot stand to hear Robert Zimmerman sing, but he can write well. Anyways, its a cottonwood, saw it down, get them to share the cost, they are bad news.

Yeah they are bad news, although I would rather save trees than take them, I have little respect for Cttonwoods...However the issue here is I don't want to end up in court of a weed with bark, just because the tree doesn't respect its boundaries.

I had a client ask me to take a small basswood, once. It seemed like it was a long ways back in his yard, but it was a small tree, crowded by alot of other larger ones, heavily photropic towards his playground, etc. 10 minutes later the tree was gone...11 minutes later the homeowner behind my client was threatening to sue me for taking HIS tree, and my client never admitted he asked me to cut that tree at all. I belonged to the neighbors property, and imediately I was in the middle of a neighborhood fued. I was able to make amends with the trees actual owner...but I never cross property lines again, without both neighbors agreeing to what is being done, who is paying, and who is liable for the decision.

Street Legal? I'd lost track of him long before that. Saw him play in '67, marched to his beat into the 70's then followed different drummers

re the basswood, funny how an experience can be imprinted so deep it dictates our behavior.

hey newb, got a camera?

==Brother listened to him in the60's, I followed him all through the 70s Street Legal came out in 78, (I think) HIs new cd isn't bad if you liked his Another Side of BD, definitely a more mature work,....yes its sad, but even little Bobby Dylan grew up...

Regarding the topic...Remember the topic,...this is a thread about the topic...

As said, and reitterated by several of your peers, respect property lines. Neighbors can get very touchy...and you do not want to get in disputes between them. As an outsider many times you will be the first to be thrown to the wolves to settle the dispute. So make sure both neighbors are not only on board with what you are doing, but understand when the property lines will be crossed, what damage may incur, (if any) etc. If possible convey all of this with both neighbors present at the same time.
Good luck,

Jerry Garcia still lives in all of us....or at least in the hearts of those who can't quite remember what they did last Saturday
Treeco,....funny how you can find a kindred spirit in someone even when you start out on the wrong foot with them.
I remember we got into it quite awhile ago, a little misinformation, and a joke taken the wrong way can sure ruin a person's attitude toward another. I think we would probably get along if we met in person. Might not always agree, but I think we would get along.
I use to live near where Bobby Z grew up, rough area.
Good luck to you
Clearance...his voice may be somewhat gruff but he kind of reminds me of you, might be hard to listen to sometimes, but has alot to say.

Vaden would probably all right too.

We got into it over a post you made as a joke to another member, and I got really bent out of shape about it. I went way overboard and became quite insulting...and some others joined in. Quite awhile ago, probably over a year.

Since then, however I have watched your posts...I don't always agree...but you definitely got your points.

Vaden...Actually I think he's quite intelligent, and has alot to offer....but we definitely have our disagreements. "ain't no good guys, ain't no bad guys"
