It would be sooo sweet, if I, as an employer could respond like my insurance company to loss....if there is no damage or loss, your hourly rate remains the same, however, if something goes wrong, your hourly rate will be adjusted at MY discretion.

In a perfect world, employees would treat my property and the customers as they do their own, yeah right!!!!!

Point is, I have to have something in place to motivate the majority of non-driver license, drug addict, alchololic, underacheiving people who apply for the ground position I am offering.

What is going to make them clear the path for brush out of the back yard?

Money, plain and simple!

Try appreciating your workers and having realistic expectations. Keep expectations fairly low and be sure to tell people when they do a good job.

I repeatedly tell my ground man good job while we are working together on removals. I make sure that he and any spectators know that I couldn't do it without him.

Money?? then all of us who make less than $100K a year would do a chitty job.

Money matters some but it is not everything.

I do appreciate my workers, as long as they appreciate their job, and after 22+ years in 4 countries and 3 continents, I have very realistic expectaions of my workers!

Excellent!, so do I

I too make less than 100K per year, what is your point?

I Totally agree!, but you cannot argue that to a $11 per hour employee, it matters alot!

I think the employee incentive program is a good idea. There is not one where I work nor do I expect to ever see one.

As for damage to customer property, we've always kind of gone by "you break it you buy it". That does have some limitations, but it at least puts the accountability to the breaker.

As for the original post, I too feel the final pot should be divided up beyond the forman. He may deserve more of the pot, but everyone pitched in. Just like the qb that wins the Heisman, he would not win if it werent for the o-line. I also like the monthly/quarterly payout idea. It helps keep the program in mind.

As for recongnizing your groundies, a nice way to say "Thanks" is to take them to lunch, buy em a 12 pk, Christmas gift,... you get the point. Make sure to tell them though why you are doing what youre doing.

I'm the direct supervisor for 10 horribly underpaid people. The salaries are fixed, and I don't have any monetary incentives I can use. Quite honestly, this shows how useful other forms of encouragement and motivation can really make a difference. If you show ppl that they are effecting positive change, they love that. I love it - it motivates me.

If money is your primary reward, that's fine. But it's costly. I think the best kind of work environment that exists is one that is welcoming - one that draws people to work on time and is an environment where ppl can get things done. Finding ppl who enjoy what they do is key --> interview lots, hire few. Good ppl are found at good organizations. Good organizations have good ppl.

FYI: I'm the student body president at my school, and I hired my staff after getting elected in the spring. There are 27 unpaid senators as well, which is certainly an even more difficult group to motivate.
