for a while there in camp i was cleaning my chains in a bucket of laundry detergent cause that's all the camp had. was a waste of time as regardless, your stone needs to be dressed every chain when doing 115DL's. start to finish i end up with a fresh stone for my next chain no matter how i do it so i'd rather save the step of cleaning them. very rarely see guys who cut for a living clean them as well. filers have zero worries leaving them dirty.

Some chains do not need it. Might depend on if you are sharpening your own chains, chains for others, scrounged chains, etc. I get some that look like they were baked in asphalt. Often find 'horror stories' underneath the gunk! Some examples buried in this thread:

in pitchy fir some gunk builds up ,a soak of wd 40 on them and back to cutting is my extent of cleaning ,i grind mu chains,so a dorty one may take 6-8 light dressings where a clean one i will dress once for lh and once for rh with a 105 dl 3/8 or a 96 dl .404 ,this is for square cutters ,the usg stays pretty good for several chains before a dress.

It looks like a chisel chain to me! I sharpen chisel chains at 25 degrees and i would personally prefer a little more "hook" on the tooth, just file a little deeper and and lighten the preasure on the file a little and let it "dig in" by itself. Never force the file to bite/dig in, it shortens the files lifespan and generally reduce the precission off the sharpening and lessens the smoothness off the toths cuttingface

too much point and it will roll over quick, only need enough hook to have the side plate slightly behind the top plate cutting edge.

Hahaha the dishwasher is a great parts washer . Cascade works just fine . Dishwasher gets hot enough to flash dry . I throw in and container of oil after I sharpen . I only clean my chains if they are extra crappy . But you would be shocked how nice your covers come out of a dishwasher . I have a great parts washer but that’s more work

Be easy on me. All you experts please give me some tips and tricks. The chain seems to cut well but I like to learn so I'm asking for advice. I touch it up every tank or 2 at the most. The chain is a 3/8. Sharpened at 30 degrees and the rakers are set about .028. Hopefully the pics turned out ok.

Using the next size smaller file by itself inside the gullet to open up more chip clearance, then I use a file n guide with the correct size file and angle on the top edge.
