Crocodile steals man's chainsaw

A 4.4-metre crocodile has chased a man up a tree in the Northern Territory while the man was cleaning-up debris left by cyclone Monica.

The owner of the Corroboree Park Tavern, Peter Shappert, says the man was trying to remove a tree that had fallen against the saltwater crocodile pen.

Mr Shappert says the crocodile, named Brutus, managed to take possession of the chainsaw the man was using.

"He's been a bit upset with the noise, so he's come shooting out of the pond, run up the tree and tried to grab Freddy the chainsaw man," he said.

"So he's missed Freddy and grabbed his chainsaw instead ... he's swimming around with a large Stihl chainsaw hanging out of his mouth."

The clean-up effort was delayed while staff tried to win back the necessary machinery.

"I was going to drain the pen and then ask him politely to let go of the chainsaw," Mr Shappert said.

Although staff have now retrieved the chainsaw, Mr Buckland says it has been written-off.

He says his relationship with the crocodile is also on the rocks.

"We're not seeing eye to eye at the moment," he said.

Mr Buckland says Brutus lost a few teeth during the ordeal , but was otherwise unharmed.

Mr Shappert says he is thinking of changing the crocodile's name from Brutus to two-stroke.

Note: This wasn't a little gator out of the swamps. 2000+ lbs of muscle with teeth at the front.

Maybe that's why a throttle lock isn't such a bad thing to have on a chainsaw!

If a 2000 lb croc is going to eat your saw, it might as well be running.

I'll try and hunt down a better photo.

Another version of the story...

A CROCODILE agitated by a chainsaw's noise chased the man operating it and snatched it from him.

Freddy Buckland was at a Northern Territory roadhouse on Friday cutting a dead tree which had fallen against a saltwater crocodile pen during Cyclone Monica when the 4.4m reptile struck.

"As he was trimming up the tree on the outside, the croc jumped out of the water and sped along the tree about 18, 20 feet and actually grabbed the chainsaw out of his hands," said Peter Shappert, the owner of the Corroboree Park Tavern, 80km east of Darwin.

"It must have been the noise . . . I don't think he was actually trying to grab Freddy but I'm not sure. He had a fair go at him . . . I think he just grabbed the first thing he could and it happened to be the chainsaw."

Mr Buckland was not injured, nor was the crocodile, named Brutus.

"But he (the crocodile) is still a bit upset . . . he's still a bit agitated but he's all right," Mr Shappert said.

"He chewed on the chainsaw for about an hour-and-a-half, then we finally got it out.

"We got a bit of reinforcing rod, bent with a hook on the end, and at the same time we were draining the pen. It's still in one piece but, yeah, it's buggered."

Mr Shappert said he was thinking about changing the crocodile's name to "two-stroke".

As for the cleaning-up effort, it's been postponed for a couple of days.

"We've just left the tree where it is. I think we'll reassess how we're going to do it," Mr Shappert said.

Angry croc in chainsaw massacre

IT seems the sound of a chainsaw is annoying enough to drive a croc, well, up the tree.
In a bizarre incident near Darwin yesterday, a 4.4m saltwater crocodile named Brutus stood on its tail, reached up a tree and snatched a chainsaw from a handyman.

Locals were then forced to spend 90 minutes trying to extract the mangled machinery from the croc's mouth.

"It was unbelievable," said the relieved chainsaw operator, mining worker Fred Buckland. "It all happened so quickly."

The drama unfolded at about 9am at Corroboree Park Tavern, 80km southeast of Darwin, where several trees had blown over as a result of wind from Cyclone Monica, which passed through the area early in the week. One had fallen against a crocodile enclosure, where tourists come to see the 800kg beast known as Brutus.

So Mr Buckland, 47, went up the tree to cut the top off with a chainsaw. Before long, the croc was reaching almost 5m up the tree.

"He was moving at a hundred mile an hour," Mr Buckland said. "I wouldn't have thought something so big could move so quick. I sacrificed my chainsaw. It was either that or me, so he got the chainsaw."

The croc swam around with the chainsaw in its mouth before locals "wrestled" it away.

Croc's saw point

April 29, 2006

A SALTWATER crocodile jumped 6m in the air and ripped a chainsaw out of a man's hands yesterday.

Fred Buckland was cutting up a tree which had fallen in the 4.4m saltie's enclosure at Corroboree Park Tavern, in the Northern Territory, about 10am.

The 10m tree fell across the boundary fence after Cyclone Monica swept through the tourist centre, 80km southwest of Darwin this week.

It was feared the fence could break under the weight of the tree and the croc could then have escaped.

"He didn't want to go into Brutus' pen so he stood on a ladder and leaned over to cut the tree," Tavern owner Peter Shappert said.

"I think Brutus was a bit upset with all the noise and in two seconds he leapt 20ft off the water and scrambled up the tree, snatching the chainsaw out of his hand.

"Freddy got a bit of a scare and jumped straight off the ladder. He was certainly ready for his rum for the day and it was only 10am.

"Freddy was very lucky. It could have been him dragged back into the pond and eaten for breakfast."

Mr Shappert said Brutus lost a few teeth in the incident but was otherwise unharmed.
