Racers use full comp for a reason, it is faster cutting. Thus, I run full comp on 20-24", semi skip on 24-28 inch, and full skip on 28 on up...

Two reasons for running skip, better skip clearance on long bars, and easier to sharpen. Plus a bit less drag.

For a 20" bar, go with the 361. If you need a 24" bar, go with the 441. I haven't run the 441, but they say it's so smooth that you won't notice the weight. In big wood, you'll finish the cut sooner and will be doing less work than if you were running a smaller saw.

I read the skip comment, sorry dude shat:confused: . What type of chain is on your bigger saw?

Usually run full comp-don't even think about skip until over 30". But have had an odd setup for many years. Do my climbing with the 200t, then stem work with saws like the 357/361 with up to a 20" bar. Anything bigger than that the 394/395/066 gets pulled out. Maybe i'm just used to the way they will pull a 24"/28" bar with no problem full comp. 441 with skip on a 24" bar is probably fine-441 with full comp on a 24" bar is a bit disappointing. Just my $.02.

Well there ya have it !!!!!!!

We cant agree on aything Bermie!!!!!! :givebeer: :givebeer: :givebeer: :dizzy: I run a 28 with semi skip on mt MS 440 and a 32" with full skip on my WHS 044/460 BB,,,,, no problemo~~~~~~!!!!!

I'm going to say that if you need to run a 24" bar more than 10% of the time, pay the extra $100 and get the 441. If it's the once a month for a couple of hours kind of use, get some skip chain and a 361.

Ian

Ian said it!

The 361 will weight a bit less than the 290 (powerhead weight), the 441 a good bit more - and you (Bermie) are not big, so.......

I never heard of "paper" air filters on the 361, but anyway there are mesh ones to be had (all I use).

OK Berm, you're 115lbs soaking wet, carrying the saw thru bushes a lot, if an 18" bar ain't long enough, then those trees you're doin' are getting to be pretty big mothers, 360 powers best with 18" bar and the saw just 'feels' better if using it all day. Does for me anyway, but the weight thing, between 440 and 360, plus the economy thing, assuming you're lugging around petrol too, also manouverbility, if that's such a word, specially in steep rough terrain or finicky cutting, undergrowth etc.. The 360 wins out for me over the 440 which also uses a lot more petrol over a day, and even though the 440 with 20" bar can deal to the bigger stuff easier, an 18" 360 still breezes through pretty much anything thing the 440 can do.

Thanks everyone!

Hey, thanks for all the feedback everyone! :jester:

As for bars 18-20" would be normal, 24" would be rare and I could borrow a saw from one of the other companies. (but wouldn't it be nice to have my own!!)

I shall retire to ponder....stay tuned!:chainsaw:

(treebeard, I dunno about 'top' arbo thing! I have my moments but...!)

Pick the 361...I actually like that little saw quite a bit...and as Andy said, you can run a longer bar with skip chain. The 441 is fat if you ask me. I don't like the ergonomics...can't comment on the power. I think the boys at Stihl missed the mark on that saw. The 460 is a nice machine...4 tanks through it now.

The 440's still distinctly more gruntier/torquey than a 360, 460's are basically a slightly heavier 440 that pushes a longer bar better, 360's advantage is lightness, ease of use and decent fuel economy

I'd go with a 361 also (oops I did already)

And your local new prices make me wonder how much a 'used' saw head -or used chainsaw 'parts' would cost including shipping & duty.

Yes....there lies the question!

New or used will both attract the same duty 22%, so it depends what the invoice says!;)
Shipping is a killer because of weight.

Regardless, I do believe I will get a 361. Weight, size of timber/bar length, range of use for my work all point towards it. Now to get creative....

Thanks everyone for all your great suggestions and advice! you:rockn:

Even at 22%, you're still looking at only $132 for a $600 saw. $732 versus $1200. Can shipping be THAT much??

Shipping can add a chunk, then the dealer adds his cut....
Still, you're right, just under $1000 vs $1200, and his first price on the printed Stihl tag in the shop is $1421!!!!!

Negotiations have commenced.

Good luck, btw the part number for the 361 mesh filter (that is all I use) is 1135 120 1601, while the "felt" one, that I think is the one you referred to as "paper" - is 1135 120 1600.....

I also suggest that you get a 18" bar (E, not ES) for most use, and a longer one (with skip chain) for when you really need it.....

The 361 is really fun with a 15" and 3/8 x 8 though - but stay with 7-pin with longer bars.......:biggrinbounce2:

Thanks for the details 'Troll, useful information and handy to have right at hand when visiting the shop!

Urb' EVERYTHING has duty assessed coming in here, used or not. there are a very few items which are 10% and fewer that are 0% (printed matter) The key to keeping costs down is in the invoice!

The only time saws and stuff got in duty free was after hurricane Fabian in 2003. It was bad around here!

Tax

Do you pay tax on shipping?

get a saw invoice for say £300, and shipping charge for the balance?

Was the 372XP never used, only rusty muffler? New 372 for less money than a 361.... I would take a new chat with the Husky dealer, see if you can get an even lower price. Or try all three of them?

I also thought of that, but the 372 also has a much larger and heavier powerhead than the 361, although not as large and heavy as the 441.......

.....I love both, for different use!
